Why does the GOP hate women? Did they all hate their mothers as well, or did they have an older sister who teased and harassed them in their youth? Maybe it’s the fact that the women they went to school with all received better grades and were favored by their teachers. Why do they continue to escalate the war on women when they desperately need their votes next year?
GOP Congressmen and women continue to vote against bills which would positively affect women. They continue to deny them equal pay and extended family leave, and make the United States the only nation in the developed world to do so. Their assault is now focused on Planned Parenthood.
When film which was altered by a pro-life group giving an inaccurate characterization of the organization was delivered to a Republican Congressman, several legislators whose support comes from the Christian religious right, immediately called for defunding Planned Parenthood.
Margaret Sanger founded the American Birth Control League in 1921. The name was changed in 1942 to Planned Parenthood. For 94 years the organization has helped low-income and poor women with their reproductive systems. It provides counseling, birth control, and testing. It also performs abortions, but no federal funds have been used for the latter since 1976. Millions of women who lack sufficient income to seek the services of a private physician have been assisted with little or no cost to them.
Nationwide, Planned Parenthood receives just over $500 million. To give an idea of how little this amount is, President Obama just vetoed a defense spending bill which would cost $612 billion.
Ted Cruz, the junior Senator from Texas, and a presidential wannabe, led his TEA Party and Republicans in the effort to defund the organization. If he didn’t get his way, he wanted to shut down the federal government, again. Although he was aware that achieving his goal was impossible, the President had promised to veto any such legislation, he continued his battle. Most true Republicans did not vote with Cruz, and just yesterday a budget was approved by both parties, while Planned Parenthood remains unscathed.
Last week Texas Representative and TEA Party member Louie Gohmert joined with Cruz and 25 of their cronies in an effort to remove Ms. Sanger’s photograph from the National Portrait Gallery; it is hanging in the ‘Struggle for Justice’ exhibit.
“There is no ambiguity in what Margaret Sanger’s bust represents: hatred, racism and the destruction of unborn life,” wrote Cruz. “So many of the people who have arisen out of poverty and done great things for the country and the world, if she had her way, they would have never been born,” said Gohmert.
Presidential candidate Ben Carson, who has proven that he denies most science, added to the defiling of Ms. Sanger’s character. He claims she believed in ‘eugenics,’ and did not like black people. He added that most Planned Parenthood clinics are located in black communities “so that you can find a way to control that population.” Really?
When is a black man not a black man? When he hates black people.
It should be noted that the GOP is in favor of rich, white women. But if you have little or no income, are black or Hispanic, they want to force you to keep an unwanted pregnancy even in the case of incest or rape. They believe a fetus is more important than a woman.
Waging a war on women is not the right term; they are assaulting women by removing their personal rights and supporting a special interest group; the Christian religious right.
