There were no big surprises in last night’s GOP debate, but there were a couple of things I did not expect to see on the stage. First of all it was much nearer to a true debate than the previous two fiascos. The other was Ohio Governor John Kasich’s candor. To hear a candidate from the GOP admit certain facts while the other ten remained in denial was refreshing.
Kasich had obviously been seeking an opportunity to say something. When a very poor group of moderators asked what he believed was his greatest weakness, he lashed out at Ben Carson and Donald Trump.
Obviously pointing a finger at the two front runners, he said that the Republican Party was on the “verge, perhaps, of picking someone who cannot do this job.” Kasich explicitly named their signature positions as being “fantasy” politics. “I’ve watched to see people say that we should dismantle Medicare and Medicaid and leave the senior citizens out in the cold,” the Ohio governor said. “I’ve heard them talk about deporting 10 or 11 [million] people here from this country out of this country, splitting families. I’ve heard about tax schemes that don’t add up, that put our kids in a deeper hole than they are today.”
Earlier in the week Kasich said that the proposals coming from his party were “just crazy.”
The other direct attack came from Jeb Bush when he questioned Marco Rubio’s work ethic. Since he began his campaign Rubio has missed 40 percent of votes in the Senate. It failed to resonate as Rubio satisfactorily defended himself.
He could have attacked Rubio for his continued rants against Hillary Clinton about Benghazi. Eleven hours of grilling Ms. Clinton by the GOP wasn’t enough for the junior Senator from Florida.
While Jeb Bush once more displayed his lack of intellect, Kasich tarnished his image as a ‘nice guy,’ even though he was 100 percent correct about Trump and Carson. Neither man knows anything about governing our country and would be dangerous for our nation.
The third show put on by the GOP was a little better than the first two, but it remained an event containing 75 percent attacks. Little substance was revealed to the American people. This gave Chris Christie his one moment to shine.
One of the moderators asked a question about betting on football. Christie questioned the question. Angrily he asked ‘why was the subject important’ when Al Qaeda and ISIS want to destroy America. He said that there are important issues and some of the questions were frivolous.
Mainstream media claims that Marco Rubio emerged as the winner in last night’s freak show. I believe that there were no winners, only losers. Compared to the Democratic Debate, when complete answers were given on the issues facing our nation, it was amateurish at best.
In all fairness, the Democratic Debate had a true journalist as its moderator; Anderson Cooper. It was unfair for the GOP when all three debates were under the control of fake newspersons.
