GOP and its Support of Guns

Rick Perry

It’s no secret that the GOP supports the unrestricted sale and use of guns; it is supported by the NRA Lobby with millions of dollars in campaign contributions. Does it also support guns to give supporters a tool to silence its dissenters?

District Judge Julie Kocurek is a Texas State Judge appointed by George W. Bush in 1999. She expressed criticism of Bush’s policies and became a Democrat in 2006. She was also critical of Rick Perry. She supported charges of Perry misusing his power when he was in office. Judge Kocurek was shot outside of her home in Austin, Texas last night. She was seriously injured, but survived. Was her attacker a GOP extremist and a gun nut? Very likely.

Of course much of what I’m writing is somewhat facetious. But this is another example of how America has become the most violent nation in the world, and how dangerous the gun nuts have become.

It is unlikely that changing our gun laws would have prevented the attack on Judge Kocurek. However there are many situations which could be prevented by the use of common sense. Comprehensive background checks for all gun purchases, and the elimination of assault rifles and high-output magazines do not violate the second amendment; they are simply the right thing to do.

I know that I have repeated this statement multiple times, but I believe it is extremely important for the safety of our citizens. Those who blindly support the NRA Lobby will dismiss anything I say now or have ever said, and they would be wrong. Our laws must support the majority and not the few. This is the main complaint about the GOP; it supports special interests and denies that the working class exists.

Many in the GOP refuse to acknowledge that the NRA is not a gun right’s advocate. It is a lobby for gun manufacturers and gun sellers. It doesn’t give a damn about the second amendment; it cares about profit. True supporters of the second amendment are people such as myself, but I am also a realist. Thomas Jefferson believed that the Constitution is a ‘living document.’ He foresaw the future, and was aware that changes in the world and our nation would require alterations in our nation’s primary law. He proposed a revision every 19 years, but his suggestion fell on deaf ears.

Fortunately doctors believe that Judge Kocurek will make a full recovery. Her shooter remains at large.

Where was Rick Perry last night?
