June Cleaver and women who played similar roles such as Donna Reed do not exist in America today. Women are remaining single for a more lengthy period of time, and when they choose to marry, they seek a partner, not a master. Women often remain in their parent’s homes as the seek higher education and financial independence. To accomplish their goals, single women are returning to their childhood residence; 36.4 percent of women are now living with their parents, a number not experienced since the 1940’s. Single women are quickly becoming our nation’s largest block of voters.
Many career women choose not to marry. If they feel the need to have a child artificial insemination is method most frequently discussed. Women reveal that marriage is no longer the primary goal. When I was a young man growing up in the 1950’s, young women were expected to marry after high school. The alternative was to attend college with the primary purpose of finding a suitable husband.
This great change in the attitudes of young women should be notable to the men who continue to dominate elected positions in Washington. They will be the ones who decide the outcome of elections in the near future. More women than men are graduating from college, and this will relate to the balance of economic power in our nation, and legislation in Congress will become an increasingly important issue.
While the GOP continues to fail women, this growing group of younger voters are moving farther away from those on the right. They support reasonable immigration reform and same-sex marriage. They are the ones who will fight to improve our educational system.
Both men and women between the ages of 19-34 are now living with their parents at a higher rate than in previous decades, but the change for women has moved much more quickly. Today’s young woman refuses to be subservient to a husband or life partner. Today’s young woman will likely make more money throughout her career than her male counterpart. Today’s young women vote. Today’s young women doubt the necessity and validity of religion.
Our nation elected its first black president twice, and made a statement that old, white, rich men were no longer the driving force in our nation.
Hillary Clinton will likely win the Democratic nomination for president in 2016. Will the American people once again make a statement and elect our first female president? Young women will have an important role in making that decision.
In the future 2016 may be remembered as ‘the year of the woman.’
