Jameis Winston is a lucky man. If he had played football for a university which had morals, he would not be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers today. In consort with the Tallahassee Police Department, officials at Florida State University made a statement that there was not enough evidence to put Winston on trial for the alleged rape of a female student. His was not the only incidence in which a football player received special treatment.
Erica Kinsman is Winston’s accuser. She subsequently filed a lawsuit. Until August, Melissa Ashton had been director of FSU’s victim advocate program. She stated in a deposition taken last June that charges against approximately 20 members of the football team for misconduct were ignored by the University and head coach Jimbo Fisher. Winning is everything.
Ms. Ashton claims that many of the alleged sexual assault victims refused to go through the process of seeking punishment for their attackers, fearing repercussions.
Depositions related to the Winston case from Ms. Ashton and Coach Fisher were subpoenaed, but FSU attempted to prevent their revelation to the public. They did win support for part of the document’s removal based on supposed educational references.
FSU President John Thrasher claimed that the university does not tolerate rape. He voiced his opposition on a CNN documentary focusing on campus sexual assault and featuring Jameis Winston and Erica Kinsman.
Other offenses by members of the football team are frequently ignored by the Tallahassee police in collusion with university security.
Most recently P.J. Williams, the Most Valuable Defensive Player in a National Championship game drove his car in front of a teenager on his way home from work. Both cars were totaled. Williams and two passengers ran from the scene. Returning 20 minutes later, it was discovered that he was driving with a suspended license. In similar situations criminal charges were filed; Williams received two traffic tickets.
Coach Fisher refused to comment on the situation. The alleged corruption is under investigation by the NCAA.
