In 2012, then Florida State Quarterback Jameis Winston was accused of raping a female student. The university, in consort with the Tallahassee legal authorities, claimed that there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute the star athlete. This has been standard policy for important members of the football team.
Today Winston is the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to recent testimony, he should most likely be in jail instead of on a football field.
Erica Kinsman is Winston’s accuser. She has filed a lawsuit against Florida State University, claiming that the school was indifferent to her complaint and therefore denied her of educational opportunities guaranteed by law.
Tallahassee Police Officer Scott Angulo was deposed on October 22nd. Friday USA Today was given the contents of Angulo’s deposition. He admitted that the investigation was sloppy, and did not include attempts to interview potential witnesses, review surveillance tape from the bar, or talk to employees at the location where the alleged rape occurred.
Winston had other violations at the university, including surveillance camera proof of a shoplifting incident.
Florida State University’s campus police have often arrived at the scene of an alleged crime by a member of the Seminole football team before a thorough investigation could be conducted by the Tallahassee Police.
The university has insured that the football team is virtually untouchable. They complained vehemently recently when a documentary concerning sexual abuse on college campuses was recently released and much of the focus was on Winston and Ms. Kinsman.
