Will the American People Surrender Freedom for Security?

Trump

The 2016 campaign season cannot be compared to any of the past. One party has two highly qualified candidates, while the other is led by a buffoon whose ideas have been compared to fascism. However, one expert denies that label; he says that Trump fails to have strong principals, and therefore cannot be categorized as such.

Political ‘experts’ continually fumble when asked why Trump became successful, and continues to lead in all polls although he is openly racist and bigoted, while telling blatant lies and proposing un-American actions. They claim that his success can be credited to his ‘straight forward’ approach, and his separation from the corruption in Washington. I believe that the latter may be closest to the truth. Supporting Trump makes the statement that you are against the status quo within the GOP. Voters are expressing their discontent with a ‘do-nothing’ Congress. They are disgusted with another barrage of unqualified and unimpressive candidates whose ambitions exceed their abilities.

Trump began his campaign accusing all undocumented Hispanic residents of rape and murder. He insisted that more than 11 million men, women, and children should be deported. He continued outrageous suggestions such as setting up a database of Muslims living in the US.  He mocked a journalist’s disability. He would bring back waterboarding, and kill family members of terrorists, as he continues to make false statements. His poll numbers continue to rise.

GOP leadership has attempted multiple efforts to derail Trump; they have produced the opposite reaction; he becomes more popular. At least one member of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Ward Baker, has suggested that other candidates should act more like the brash real estate mogul. He believes that they should be more forceful in their approach.

Apparently none of them are intelligent enough to change their approach. They all remain in attack mode. They have not proposed a single positive approach to cure our nation’s ills. They continue to ignore and deny issues which they oppose and will not negotiate. Special interests continue to receive their support while the wishes of the American people are not addressed. Although after the 2012 election GOP leaders promised to move forward into the 21st century, in reality they have regressed into the dark policies of the 1950’s.

Fascism analyst Chip Berlet described Trump and his campaign tactics.

“Trump is not an example of creeping totalitarianism; he is the white man growing hoarse with bigoted canards while riding at the forefront of a new nativist movement.”

His followers deny the Constitution and would forgo their individual rights and their freedom for the veil of security. They continue to live in fear, and have lost all hope for the future. Trump’s success is based on negativity and raising emotions including blind hatred.

It appears more likely with each passing day that Trump will win the GOP nomination. His opponents fail to take a stand in favor of the American people. Their support of the NRA, big business, and the one-percent has not gone unnoticed. Four of the candidates currently hold seats in the Senate which is controlled by their party. Their failure to pass important legislation has resonated loudly with the electorate. Their failure to perform the job for which they were elected guarantees that if they were to win the White House, the American people would see more of the same.
