Super Bowl 50

SB 50

Approximately 99 percent of my articles are written about politics. Previously I wrote dozens of articles for a sports blog, primarily the NFL. I wrote opinions about the players, teams, and the league office. After last weekend’s games, I felt that I should once again offer my opinion which is as valid as any of the ‘experts’ according to their records.

First of all, I must reveal the fact that I am a diehard Pittsburgh Steeler fan. Understanding the difficulties they endured during the 2015 season, I continued to believe that they would still win Super Bowl 50. They were in the exact same position as when they won Super Bowl XL. That did not happen when a fumble sealed their fate.

Other teams of interest fell as they failed to play to their capabilities. Over-hyped quarterbacks left promises unanswered. Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson were unable to secure victories. A field goal kicker eliminated the Minnesota Vikings from advancing. Kansas City lacked the assertiveness to move forward with a quarterback who is an excellent backup.

So today we are left with the most boring four teams in the NFL who will play in one of the most hyped and yet historic games in the history of the NFL. Nobody cares about the Broncos, the Patriots, the Panthers, or the Cardinals. These teams are not exciting, and at least two of the quarterbacks are disliked by NFL fans. Adding to the lack of interest is the fact that the home teams are likely to win on Sunday as they did last weekend.

Super Bowl 50, (no Roman numerals this year), will likely be between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers; and who cares who wins?

The greatest team in Super Bowl history is the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed closely by the San Francisco 49ers. Before the season began, I fantasized that an historic game would be between those two teams in Levi Stadium. San Francisco’s epic mistakes regarding changes in management on and off the field eliminated them, and injuries mixed with unfair player punishments by Roger Goodell made it difficult for the best team in the AFC.

So we are left with teams which are the least interesting in the NFL. Carolina had the most efficient team in the NFL, and they were as exciting as a neighborhood fireworks display. Arizona has a ‘has-been’ quarterback who has never had success with multiple teams. New England wins only because opposing teams allow Tom Brady to stand untouched as he surveys his receivers. And the Denver Broncos are forced to rely on a player who may have been the greatest quarterback in NFL history but is beyond his prime.

I have watched every Super Bowl. For the first time ever I turned off Super Bowl XLVIII well aware that it was over before halftime. I watched reruns of Saturday Night Live. I am fearful that Super Bowl 50 may equal my disappointment.

CBS has been promoting Super Bowl 50 for months. I fear that it may prove to be a huge disappointment.
