Tom Patton Raises Chauvinism to a New Level

Ohio

One of the great problems facing the Republican Party is its war on women. Iowa Senator Joni Ernst made a claim that it does not exist, but she was simply in denial. Congressional voting records offer proof that women’s rights and safety are of no concern to the GOP. There are multiple examples of right wing politicians who are chauvinistic and misogynists. Tom Patton, who is seeking the Republican nomination for the state House in Ohio, has taken these negative attributes to a new level.

Patton’s challenger for the party’s nomination is Jennifer Herold. Ms. Herold is married and the mother of two children.

“The gal that’s running against me is a 30-year-old, you know, mom, mother of two infants,” Ohio Senate Majority Leader Tom Patton (R) said. “And I don’t know if anybody explained to her we’ve got to spend three nights a week in Columbus,” he added. “So, how does that work out for you? I waited until I was 48 and my kids were raised, and at least adults, before we took the opportunity to try.”

In other parts of the interview Patton referred to Ms. Herold as “young gal,” and “sweetie.”

This was her response.

“Tom, only one man in my life is allowed to call me ‘sweetie.’ From now on, I respectfully ask you to refer to me as Jen, Jennifer, Ms. Herold, or your opponent.”

She called his words insulting and reprimanded him for questioning her intelligence.

I might inform Mr. Patton that men have controlled our political system for nearly 240 years, and have failed their constituents and our nation. He is obviously not a student of history or sociology. Women are a growing force in our nation, and the time is near when they will be in control; Mr. Patton’s time may be nearer than he believes.
