If one claims to be a Christian, he or she must follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, and not selectively choose passages from the Bible to support their personal beliefs and prejudices. One of the greatest sins committed by many who claim to be Christians is judging their fellow man or woman.
Larycia Hawkins was a tenured political science professor at Wheaton College; a self-proclaimed Christian school. When she stated that Muslims and Christians worshipped the same God, and wore a hijab is support of Muslim women, she was suspended by the college. A statement from the school now reveals that she is no longer a member of the faculty.
A joint statement said Hawkins and the college had “found a mutual place of resolution and reconciliation” and that the two sides “will part ways” after reaching a confidential agreement.
Hawkins taught students at Wheaton for nine years. She was well-respected, but when she offered respect for American Muslims the college failed to support her Christian ethics. Jesus Christ instructed his followers to love one another, and to accept the differences between people. No one can claim to be Christian if they do not believe in His teachings.
Hawkins displayed her true belief in her faith while the university offered prejudice.
I do not believe that religious based universities and colleges offer a complete education for young men and women.
I went to Catholic school until I was a junior in high school. In my final two years, I learned far more about life and other people than in the previous ten years. I had black, and Jewish friends who I never considered previously. Teaching lessons only from the Bible limits knowledge and creates misunderstanding. It also allows the success of fear tactics and eventually brainwashing.
Ms. Hawkins will now be free to allow her students the gift of free thought wherever her next position might be. She will be allowed to practice her faith without censorship.
