During a year when we elect a new president, much of the news is about politics. I, and others, cherish this fact; there is not enough time to report all of the happenings in a single day.
That said, I want to speak about something more pleasant, something more upbeat. Valentine’s Day.
I’ve heard it all; that this is a holiday invented by Hallmark and flower shops; that it is nothing more than a capitalistic event. That may be true. But, if you are in love, it can be a great opportunity to express your feelings to the person who deserves more of your attention every day of his or her life.
Because the cost of Valentine’s Day can be exorbitant, try something different. My bride and I became unhappy with one particular fact years ago, and changed the way we celebrate our devotion to each other.
Dining out on Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular events of the holiday. Because of that fact, we found ourselves rushed through our meal, and the quality of the food prepared for us was less than expected; and this was at our favorite restaurant. We also noticed that the prices were slightly higher, and the cost of a bottle of our favorite wine nearly doubled.
The next year I had Valentine’s Day off from work. When my wife came home she experienced a home filled with candlelight, and our table set for a feast. I told her to take a nice bath, and I would bring her a glass of wine.
I worked much of the day to prepare a gourmet meal; at least as gourmet as I was able to produce.
After her bath we enjoyed a leisurely dining experience, as we listened to our favorite music. No one hurried us, and we simply enjoyed each other.
Ten years later, we continue to celebrate, just the two of us.
I do purchase a card for her, but flowers arrive days before Valentine’s Day, before the price has doubled.
Early in our relationship, I wrote lines a friend of mine gave me from his collection years ago; they were corny, but original. Here are my favorite two. Try saying them to your special person.
“How was heaven before you left it?”
“Has anyone told you that they would love to be the water in your shower?”
I warned you that they were corny.
