Unless we are involved in the legal system, it is doubtful that the average man or woman has ever heard of Sri Srinivasan; but that may soon change. He may be the next Justice of the Supreme Court.
Republicans began ranting about not replacing Antonin Scalia before his body was cold. They are so afraid that a moderate might be appointed to the Court instead of another conservative extremist; they want to change the way our government works. If they get their way, the Supreme Court will not function properly for more than a year from now.
Mr. Srinivasan now serves on the Appellate Court. He has exceptional credentials, a resume which is impressive, and is pro-business. In May, 2013, the Senate approved his appointment by a vote of 97-0.
If he is President Obama’s nominee, how could even the most extreme on the right wing justify rejecting Mr. Srinivasan? Of course there is a good chance that Marco Rubio was one of the three missing votes; he fails 40 percent of his obligation.
Mr. Srinivasan’s position on many social issues is unknown. However, he was part of a legal team which convinced the High Court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, a highly prejudiced law which violated the 14th amendment.
President Obama has stated that he will nominate a replacement for Scalia later this month; and the ‘fur will fly’ from the right side of the Senate chamber.
