It was predictable that when Jeb Bush ended his futile campaign that mainstream Republicans would rush to the aid of Marco Rubio; but is it too little, too late?
Donald Trump continues to run away with the Republican Party securing a huge victory in both New Hampshire and South Carolina. He is expected to secure an even greater victory in Nevada tomorrow. Super Tuesday, March 1st, will either guarantee Trump the nomination or open up the contest for a true challenger.
Republicans don’t like Trump or the man in second place, Ted Cruz. Trump does not ‘toe the party line,’ and Cruz is the major obstructionist in our federal government, alienating both Democrats and true Republicans.
“Jeb’s network is already naturally migrating to Marco,” said Gaylord Hughey, a top Bush fundraiser from Texas, echoing what four other top donors told Reuters. “It’s the clear path.”
Another donor called the situation a “stampede.”
Oh how I love to see rich Republicans throw their money away. I hate to disappoint them, but contrary to Rubio’s television ads, I do not believe that he has a chance in November, if he can in some way surpass Trump’s lead.
He will lose badly in any true debate. He lacks the experience and intellect to discuss any of the issues without a prepared script. If he becomes the nominee, his history in politics will be heavily scrutinized; and it’s not pretty. He has not manufactured one achievement in the Senate. He was involved in a single issue; immigration. But when the compromise was accomplished by the ‘gang of eight,’ he immediately denied his own resolution and advised the House to reject it. Is this the action of an intelligent man who cares about people?
During the 2008 campaign season, the Republican Party continuously pointed to the fact that Barrack Obama had only been a Senator from 2005 until his election as the President in 2008. Marco Rubio was elected to the Senate in 2011. But his participation began to dissipate in 2015 when he decided that he was presidential material. He has failed to perform the job for which he was elected 40 percent of the time.
Rubio is a TEA Party darling, otherwise known as the party of extremists and obstructionists. He has mentioned only two issues during nine debates. He offered a tax plan which has been described by economists as a ‘generous gift to the one-percent.’ He wants to increase an already bloated Pentagon budget to more than one-trillion-dollars, and has promised to take rash action, engaging our nation in another unwinnable war in the Middle East.
Rubio is not a historian. He is also ill-informed. George Washington, and Dwight D. Eisenhower, both of whom were great generals and great presidents, warned against an overly large military industrial complex. Adding more funds to a failed military brass is literally throwing it into the trash. Nearly 50 percent of each year’s budget goes to failed projects such as the F-35.
This is not what we need in a president. Barrack Obama has led our nation out of the worst recession since the great depression. His diplomatic efforts have formed a new coalition around the world to fight terrorism; and he has worked tirelessly for the majority, ignoring special interests. We need another President Obama, not another George W. Bush.
