As Super Tuesday approached, the campaigns of Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio focused on a non-issue; Donald Trump. They attacked ‘the Donald’ on everything he has ever said, and his overall ability to lead our nation. According to the polls, it isn’t working. What they should have done months ago was talk about the issues, but they failed. This is what the voting public wants to hear, and it’s not happening. Part of this is because their policies are in opposition to the wishes of the American public majority.
Regardless, the results of today’s primaries will be definitive. A big win for Donald Trump will prove him unbeatable. Although Cruz is leading in the Texas polls, if Donald Trump could upset the junior Senator, Cruz’ campaign is over.
On March 15th the Florida primary will be held. Rubio is behind by double digits in his home state. What is now an embarrassing fact, could be the ‘poison pill’ for his desire to reside in the White House.
The rise of Donald Trump, and the implosion of the Republican Party began immediately after the 2012 general election. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus made a statement which promised changes in the GOP. Changes came, but not the ones promised by Priebus.
Weak leadership allowed severe separation within the party. A small group of extremists took control as those elected to lead the party allowed it to succeed. Eventually John Boehner resigned in disgrace, but Mitch McConnell has remained in his obstructive position.
Reince Priebus’ final failure was evident in the first Republican ‘debate’ last August. The event was hosted by FOX Noise. Priebus obviously conspired with FOX’ President Roger Ailes to derail Trump’s campaign. Although the major media has never accurately reported the facts, as I watched the debacle, from the first question this was intended to be a direct effort to embarrass Trump. Megyn Kelly and her cronies attacked Trump professionally and personally throughout the faux-debate.
The next day it was apparent that the only persons embarrassed were the FOX moderators and Republican leadership. Trump’s poll numbers rose.
Trump has increased his lead since that evening. His brash and often vile remarks have had little effect on his campaign.
Even Trump’s harshest critics are convinced that his camp will be the only group celebrating tonight. Cruz may win Texas, but that would be his only reason for smiling.
Republican pundits claim the Trump is popular because he is ‘the antithesis of Barrack Obama.’ This is simply misdirection; as usual they are denying the facts. Republican voters are tired of those they elected and have failed to keep promises or support their needs and desires. Interviews of Trump supporters reveal this as the ultimate truth.
The mistakes made by Trump’s adversaries are many. By continuing to focus their campaigns about removing Trump from the picture, they should have been making attempts to convince the American people that they would support them in Washington. That was never going to happen.
The policies of Cruz and Rubio guaranteed continued support for their wealthy owners. Rubio’s ‘tax plan’ was labeled as ‘a generous gift to the one-percent.’ When the biggest problems facing the vast majority of the American people is income inequality and a shrinking middle class, this is not the position of an American President.
Tomorrow morning will likely see Cruz and Rubio with huge headaches as their meager support from voters begin to fade.
