With every passing week it is more obvious that the Republican Party is nothing more than a gang of spoiled brats who will only play games they know they can win. Beginning with the first Republican ‘debate’ last August, the immaturity of the GOP has been revealed to all Americans.
When Antonin Scalia died at a hunting ranch in Texas, the bullies in the Senate began folding their arms, stomping their feet, and pouting. They said that they would not play this game either. They are refusing to act on President Obama’s nomination to fill the empty seat on the Supreme Court.
Here’s a little history for these obstructionists, led by Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell.
Multiple Justices have been nominated by presidents in their final year. It is not only the President’s privilege, but his Constitutional duty to insure that the Court is a functioning branch of our government.
The President has announced that he has made a decision regarding his choice for Scalia’s seat on the bench. Even if Mr. Obama suggested that Jesus Christ be appointed to the Court, Republicans would object.
One of the candidates he has been considering is Sri Srinivasan. He is an Appeals Court Judge, who was confirmed by the Senate in a 97-0 vote; but McConnell says that they will not consider him for the Court.
Trump’s support is proof that the American people are angry, but Republican politicians are in denial. They fail to admit that their refusal to perform the jobs for which they were elected is the entire reason why our system of government no longer functions.
If McConnell insists on continuing this path of obstructionism, the GOP may lose seats in the Senate in November. He is opening the door for voters who are already upset with the status quo, and will decide that change is needed. McConnell may once again be the ‘Senate Minority Leader.’
Not five minutes after President Obama announces his choice for the Court, you will hear tantrums from Republican politicians. They will once again demand that no candidate be nominated until after the election in November.
The fact is that if that becomes the situation, the Court will have an even number of Justices until next spring. Ties are likely, and these important cases before the Court may never be decided by the highest court in the land. This is nothing but intentional ignorance.
Republicans must face reality, at least once. They no longer have the support of the majority of the American people.
