Trump is not threatening the Republican Party; he is telling the truth. His supporters are angry, and could become even more so. In the remaining primaries, Trump leads in all but four states, and those states are sparsely populated and have few delegates to offer; Cruz is presently ahead in those four. Nationally Trump is leading by nearly 15 percent in a composite of the national polls.
Nearly 40 percent of registered Republican voters support Trump. If he enters the convention in July with the largest number of delegates and is denied the nomination, the party will be in total disarray, and a volatile and unstable condition could become serious.
“If you just disenfranchise these people, I think you would have problems like you’ve never seen before,” Trump said on CNN’s “New Day.”
This campaign season has been historical, and not in a good way. In the past, Republicans have rallied behind their front runner by this time. They did so regardless of whether or not the candidate was qualified, or even if he or she had questionable morals. But Trump offers other difficulties for the fractured party.
Years of inept leadership, primarily Boehner and McConnell, have resulted in an angry army of voters. Although Trump’s supporters have questionable character and appear to be dominated by racists and bigots, they do represent the electorate of the GOP. They are extremely upset with their ‘party of no,’ and are demanding that they address the issues important to the people.
Yesterday Republican leadership told the press that ‘the voters don’t nominate a presidential candidate, the party does.’ These are dangerous words from a party facing total implosion.
Instead of lining up in support of Trump, multiple Republican organizations are funding ads to defeat him after last Tuesday’s results and the complete destruction of Marco Rubio’s campaign. The division within the GOP is irreparable. They have failed the American people since 2001, and the situation only worsens.
