“The Senate is responding to the people’s voicing their disagreements with the President,” said Chuck Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee which oversees Supreme Court nominations.
That is one of the biggest lies this year; it surpasses some of Trump’s greatest fallacies. The 82-year-old Senator, who has outlived his usefulness, is denying the fact that 57 percent of the American people believe that the vacant seat on the Supreme Court should be filled as soon as possible.
Democrats are offering a unique situation in Washington; they are using logic and telling the truth. The refusal by Mitch McConnell and his cronies to perform the job for which they were elected is just another obstructionist attempt to have everything their way. Scalia’s death was a boon for the American people. His extremist views harmed our nation and the majority. Scalia continually ruled against the needs of low-income and poor Americans.
Republicans want another Scalia on the Court. They don’t want anyone nominated who would actually make decisions based on the Constitution. Judge Merrick Garland is a moderate, and he will not satisfy the majority of GOP reactionaries.
Grassley has never been challenged in Iowa. But this may change in November. Republican voters are as angry as Democrats regarding the obstructionist tactics of the last seven years.
Patty Judge is a former Lieutenant Governor who is challenging Grassley. She plans to use the Garland situation as the focal point of her campaign.
“I do not believe they have the right to say we are not going to have hearings because we have a presidential election. That’s just obstructing the process,” said Judge, who has a reputation as a centrist in Iowa politics.
“She’s one Judge that Senator Grassley can’t ignore,” said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, after a recent meeting with Judge, according to the Associated Press.
McConnell’s position may aid Democrats who are hoping to oust Republicans in the Senate. Independents are a fast growing voting bloc and they have long recognized Republicans for who they are and what they are not. They do not represent the American people; they represent the one-percent.
There has become a lack of interest regarding who wins the GOP nomination. The focus has become the Republican Party itself. Trump’s success has revealed the failures of the party for the last ten years. His supporters have rejected the party’s establishment, and will not vote for any candidate Republican leadership supports.
Although Marco Rubio’s failure was mostly his own, establishment Republican’s support of the young Senator increased his opposition from angry GOP voters.
If they truly cared about the American people, and if they want to win elections, Republican Senators would give Judge Garland an honest hearing. He may be their best opportunity to have a moderate on the Court who is not on the far left. Hillary might make a much more progressive decision.
