I have been making jokes in my writing about the close relationship between the NRA and the Republican Party. I never dreamed they could come true, but that may all change. The convention in Cleveland, Ohio, may be the most vicious in American political history, and the attendees could be ‘packing heat.’
Years ago Saturday Night Live performed a parody of Charlton Heston and his ‘gun mania.’ In the skit, a gunfight broke out at the NRA convention. It was hilarious as the participants claimed that it was the ‘greatest day of their lives.’ The body count was never revealed. Could a similar event actually happen at Quicken Loans Arena in July?
More than 21,500 morons have signed a petition to allow ‘open carrying of firearms’ at the convention. I assume many of them are Trump supporters; his nomination will not be denied!
I wasn’t sure if I would watch the convention or not. I struggled through all 13 faux-debates and found the participants disgusting. I am weary from listening to self-aggrandizing individuals say nothing, while attempting to convince the American people that they deserve your votes.
But now I must watch. If the RNC approves firearms inside the arena, I won’t miss it. This could be the Roman Coliseum all over again, but with more injuries and deaths. If I have to go to the bathroom, I will record the proceedings, I don’t want to miss one moment of what I hope will be the most entertaining political convention in history.
Among the petition’s five goals, it calls upon Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, to mount a “concerted effort to use his executive authority to override the “gun-free zone” loophole being exploited by the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.”
Exploited? What the hell are they talking about? I am aware that the gun lobby is against ‘gun free zones,’ but they do not represent the American people and their desire for safety. Their only concerns are the gun manufacturers and gun sellers. The NRA is an un-American lobby which owns a part of the Republican Party; they haven’t been a group which advocates gun safety and sensible gun laws since 1977. Increased profits are both their goal and their God.
Because the Secret Service will be in attendance, I fear that the petition will be nullified. But I continue to be hopeful.
