Paul Ryan loves to be begged. When he was asked to succeed John Boehner as the Speaker of the House, he initially say ‘no.’ This will be the same situation when he is asked by the Republican establishment to run for the presidency.
The truth is that neither Donald Trump or Ted Cruz can defeat Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders. At present, Cruz is a tool of Republican leadership and has but one purpose; to insure that the convention will be contested, because Trump will not receive the 1,237 delegates to win the nomination outright.
After Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio suspended their campaigns, it was obvious that the establishment intended to find a way to handpick their own candidate. But would this move actually give them a chance to win in November? It is highly doubtful.
Two situations may defeat the Republican candidate before November 8th; what will Trump supporters do; and will Trump run as an independent candidate?
As of today, Trump’s national poll numbers are above 40 percent. What will 40 percent of Republican voters choose to do if Trump is denied the nomination. If he runs as a third party candidate, the GOP would lose a huge percentage of their voters.
Regardless of the outcome in November, the Republican Party is permanently fractured. It would be a loss to our nation’s people, if any of those now serving in Washington, or are seeking public office, were actually Republicans. Great GOP leaders of the past are ashamed of this group who lacks every positive idea and principle which were once held close to their hearts. They fail to represent all Americans and answer only to those special interest groups who own them; the one-percent, the NRA, and the Christian religious right.
Whoever survives as the party’s nominee on July 19th, will face a difficult battle; not only from the Democratic candidate, but from the internal forces which are forcing the implosion of the once Grand Old Party.
