An aide to Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, told the media that he will make a defining statement today stating that he will not accept the Republican Party’s nomination for the presidency.
He has previously claimed that he would not accept the nomination, but he stated the same regarding his acceptance of Speaker of the House. With a growing fear that Donald Trump or Ted Cruz could be the party’s nominee, an increase in pressure from the party’s leadership suggested a change of heart by Mr. Ryan.
Ryan continues to believe that the voters should select the nominee from declared candidates. Ryan says that his primary concern is the future agenda of the House of Representatives.
Ryan will make his announcement today on the steps of the Republican National Committee Headquarters located on Capitol Hill.
I previously wrote an article expressing my belief that Ryan would capitulate to the wishes of his party’s leadership. Apparently Speaker Ryan has more character than I believed.
I, too, believe that a brokered convention is a serious mistake. The primary process must be respected. If the Republican establishment removes that process, it is expressing a lack of respect for GOP voters. In addition, they are being elitist, by displaying a belief that they are wiser than the electorate.
Another article I wrote will likely prove to be accurate. I continue to believe that the only way to save the Republican Party was to unite behind the party’s leader and move forward. Admittedly, Trump cannot and must not win the general election, but is that as important as saving the Grand Old Party?
Either way, it is a must that the party select new leadership; leadership which will move the party forward instead of backwards. It must once again represent all of the American people, reject the influence of extremists, and deny ownership by special interests.
Paul Ryan appears to be one of the few Republicans in a position of power who believes in my America. Maybe he is the beginning; the beginning of a new Republican Party which will hold the principles and values of the old Republican Party. What they have now is a ‘compost pit.’
