Has a little common sense returned to Republican leadership?
“Now I know our candidates are going to say some things to attract attention,” Mr. Priebus said, in a barely veiled reference to Mr. Trump’s attacks on what he has called “a rigged” and “corrupt” nominating process.
“That’s part of politics,” Mr. Priebus said. “But we all need to get behind the nominee.”
Reince Priebus is the Chairman of the RNC. It appears that he has ceased his losing battle to derail the candidacy of Donald Trump. Has he finally realized that saving the party is more important than winning an election?
Occasionally a devastating defeat can change the minds of even the most stubborn humans. The Republican establishment has spent millions of dollars supporting Ted Cruz, the other hated candidate. Last Tuesday Cruz was crushed by Trump in the New York State primary. Cruz received an embarrassing 14 percent of the state’s votes. Was this the wake-up call Priebus and his cronies needed?
Priebus was speaking before the chairmen and chairwomen of the California Republican committee. Not all of them agreed with Priebus’ that supporting Trump is a good idea.
Katie Packer is the group’s leader.
“We’re selling our soul as a party for what?” asked Ms. Packer, arguing that nominating Mr. Trump could imperil Republican control of Congress. “To lose our majorities for a generation?”
Ms. Packer added, “I think it’s very clear he doesn’t live up to our standards as a party.”
She obviously doesn’t get it, and never will. The truth is that if the convention is contested, and although Trump has secured the most delegates he is denied the party’s nomination, the party will split and no longer exist.
Failed policies for the last seven years created “Trumpenstein,” and the establishment must embrace its creation.
The truth is that Trump may be the party’s savior. Today’s Republican Party has moved in the opposite direction of the once Grand Old Party. New and qualified leadership could take the party back to its former greatness, and regain the respect of the American people.
History proves that at one time Republicans were great deliberators and diplomats. They worked with Democrats to pass legislation beneficial to all Americans and denied access to special interests. Prior to Citizens United, campaign funding was sensible and big money did not own the GOP. This is its opportunity to renew the Republican brand.
If those such as Ms. Packer are successful, they may win a battle but lose the war.
I have little respect for Mr. Priebus, but he is finally using his brain and forsaking emotion. Republicans need a slogan and a new path; ‘America is First When Republicans Lead.’
