The greatest victory for the American people may not be the victory of a Democrat for the presidency in 2016; it may be the return of control in the Senate to the party of intellect. Democrats would appoint a qualified candidate to the empty seat on the Supreme Court, and fill dozens of vacant federal judgeships Mitch McConnell has ignored for years. A new and working Senate Majority Leader would oust the greatest failure in senate history.
McConnell has frequently proven that he is missing a substantial number of active brain cells. He is unwittingly aiding the cause of Democrats by his inaction. In 2009 the ‘turtle’ promised that Republicans would do nothing in an ‘effort’ to insure that Barrack Obama was a one-term president; he kept his promise, even after Mr. Obama won reelection in 2012. His latest act of ignorance is refusing to hold hearings to fill the vacancy on the Court, which has made our third branch of government dysfunctional.
Several states offer an opportunity for Democrats to take control of the now useless senate. The popularity of Republicans elected in 2010 has faded, partly thanks to McConnell. At present the Senate has 54 Republicans, 44 Democrats, and 2 Independents who generally vote with progressives. Two factors will loom large if Democrats are to retake control; the presidential polls must favor the Democratic presidential candidate, and a large turnout at the polls will favor the election of more liberal candidates.
Several incumbents will face a serious challenge, and two states have open seats. Harry Reid has chosen retirement in Nevada, and Marco Rubio’s term has expired in Florida. Both states will likely see closely contested races. Both have a large number of retirees who tend to be more conservative.
Nevada is virtually two different states in one geographical boundary. The northern part of the state is more conservative, but the more populous southern section is more progressive.
Floridians frequently choose a single issue upon which to cast their ballots. Social security and Medicare, along with education for their grandchildren may inspire voters to cast their ballots for the Democratic candidate.
Our nation can only hope that a Democrat continues to live in the White House, and that the senate moves into the hands of progressives. Our government must get back to work and address the problems important to the American people. Income inequality has become the most important issue facing our nation. Our Democratic Republic has become an oligarchy, and is moving towards a plutocracy.
After suffering through a vile and offensive Republican presidential contest, the American people will likely consider their choices carefully in November. An experienced and highly qualified leader must be elected, and to assist the president, the best candidates seeking office in the Senate and House must receive our votes.
For progressives and Independents, there will be a great joy when McConnell is ousted from his position. Along with Scalia, whose absence on the Court is a blessing for the working class, defeating McConnell would be a victory for America and the working class.
