Although the truth cannot be denied, Republicans and their supporters continue to lie and claim that they are not waging a war on women. Every action taken by the right wing proves that they believe that women are second class citizens, and men have the right to control their lives. They vote against any legislation which would benefit women, and support measures which would disallow them the control of their own bodies.
The right wing’s latest complaint is about the HBO film “Confirmation.” They claim it is biased and a ploy to assist the campaign of Hillary Clinton.
If you have or have not watched the film, here’s the truth.
I watched the entire hearing in 1991. Other than what occurred away from the Senate chamber, the film was accurate. Anita Hill was unfairly grilled by Arlen Specter and Orin Hatch while Joe Biden sat silently, unwilling to come to her defense. When Clarence Thomas was questioned, he was allowed to campaign for his confirmation, and was never asked a direct and difficult question.
This was a time in our nation’s history when there was little or no concern for black women. In the 1960’s Malcolm X spoke a truism which remained accurate in 1991.
“The most disrespected person in America is the black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the black woman.”
During each day of the Thomas hearings, efforts were made to discount the veracity of Anita Hill and confirm Thomas. The ‘white man’s Senate’ was victorious.
Mark Paoletta worked for George H.W. Bush and lobbied for Thomas during the hearings. This is what he had to say after “Confirmation” was released.
“This movie is an attempt to rewrite the history of those hearings, back in 1991,” he said. “When the American people watched them in 1991, unfiltered by any liberal spin machine, they came to the conclusion after watching Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill that Thomas was telling the truth by a 2-to-1 margin, sometimes 3-to-1 in some polls. It wasn’t a gender issue — only 26 percent of women believed Anita Hill.”
This statement simply confirms the declaration of Malcolm X.
Women continue to be forced to fight for equality today. They are paid less for equal performance in the work place. When women in the military are sexually harassed, they are frequently punished for reporting the act. Hiding under the guise of religion, Republicans continue their attempts to control a woman’s reproductive system. Republicans even voted against the Violence Against Women Act.
A question to all my Republican friends: “If there is no ‘war on women,’ why do you fail to support their equality in all areas? Why do you continue efforts to deny them equal rights and protection under the law?”
In red states women are third-class citizens. This is the order of importance: Men, an unborn fetus, and finally women. Many right wing extremists believe that if during child birth there arises a choice of whether to save the life of the mother or the fetus, the fetus should be the priority.
No ‘war on women?’ Really?
