“Under a Trump administration, no American citizen will ever again feel that their needs come second to the citizens of foreign countries,” Trump said.
He added, “My foreign policy will always put the interests of the American people and American security first.”
Donald Trump made a ‘big’ foreign policy speech yesterday. The problem with his message is that the entirety of his rhetoric is summarized in the above two quotes. He offered no specifics, no substance as he read from a prepared speech.
This is not a situation reserved for Trump; this is Republican policy. They claim that they will accomplish many things for our nation but fail to tell us how they will achieve anything.
Trump offered one statement which contained importance. He reversed himself, when earlier in his campaign he said that he would send 20,000 troops to fight ISIS if elected. He promised that unlike the last Republican president, he would not rush to war.
“I will never send our finest into battle unless necessary, and I mean absolutely necessary, and will only do so if we have a plan for victory with a capital V,” Trump emphasized.
This mirrored Hillary Clinton’s past statements.
Trump may have created angst in Europe and Asia when he stated that he would attempt to ‘make deals’ with Russia and China, but if the ‘deals’ weren’t to America’s advantage, they would not be made.
The fact is that Trump has no experience in a crucial time for the entire world. All candidates who have no past knowledge with foreign affairs can claim that they will perform admirably, but the truth is that without direct involvement with international events, they would be forced to become another George W. Bush.
When Ted Cruz offered Carly Fiorina as his running mate yesterday, my first two thoughts were that he was desperate, and a woman with no experience at any level of government would be a heartbeat away from the presidency.
Trump is a businessman. His supporters claim his lack of experience in Washington is the reason they support him. They are sorely mistaken. Our nation has multiple problems which must be addressed from day one. Solutions must be found; hot air will not cure our nation’s ills. Knowledge and experience must be the qualities of the man or woman who will lead our nation forward, and deny the evils of our past.
The only positive from yesterday’s speech is that Trump finally appeared somewhat ‘presidential,’ but in truth he cannot be.
