Bandera Couty courthouse in Bandera, Texas
The dysfunctional Supreme Court, which has only eight of its nine necessary members, has upheld Texas’ racist voting law. Although the factual percentage of voter fraud in the United States is .012 percent, Texas legislators led red states in passing a law which requires voter identification. They are simply lying to the American people to hide their true reasons; denying or discouraging blacks and Hispanics from casting their ballots. A secondary reason is that these two demographics usually vote Democratic, and that is forbidden in a state which leads the nation in racist actions.
Justices Ginsburg, Sotomayor, and Kagan dissented; Ginsburg writing the paper.
The law, Justice Ginsburg wrote, “may prevent more than 600,000 registered Texas voters (about 4.5 percent of all registered voters) from voting in person for lack of compliant identification.
“A sharply disproportionate percentage of those voters are African-American or Hispanic,” she added, adding that “racial discrimination in elections in Texas is no mere historical artifact.
“Texans who lack a required form of identification cannot easily obtain it,” Justice Ginsburg wrote. “More than 400,000 eligible voters face round-trip travel times of three hours or more to the nearest” government office issuing IDs, she wrote, and they must generally present a certified birth certificate.”
Our nation is as racist today as it was in the 1960’s; the only difference is that most of it is clandestine until a situation such as this occurs.
Texas was also the first to pass laws which would force dozens of abortion centers to close. This would not affect affluent white women, but poor women and those living in poverty, who are mostly black or Hispanic, would be forced to travel great distances to obtain a legal medical procedure.
Be proud, Texans, you are number one at somethings, even if they are hate-filled and immoral. Now convince me you believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Don’t think that you haven’t been brainwashed by conservatives; this has been their intention for the last 16 years. They want a divided America so that campaigning can be focused in areas already convinced to vote for a party and not the best candidate. “Hot-button” issues were created by the right wing, and most of them have nothing to do with governing our nation.
What I fail to understand is why anyone would choose to live in Texas, Arizona, Mississippi, the Carolinas, Georgia, or Florida. They all reject fairness, equality, and ‘liberty and justice for all.’
