Thursday, two angry protests occurred in the delegate rich state of California. Both were directed at the bigoted position of Donald Trump regarding Hispanics. Although Trump’s poll numbers are above 17 percent in the Golden State today, this is representative of mostly white Republican voters.
After losing the 2012 election, Republican leadership promised to reach out to other demographics, including blacks and Hispanics. This never happened.
Donald Trump’s popularity is based on an attitude of white supremacy. He is a showman, not a politician, and is catering to his supporters. His angry rhetoric is racist, bigoted, and misogynistic. He incites violence and nurtures anger and hatred.
If you believe that these protests are important, tune into your favorite network’s broadcast of the Republican Convention which begins on July 18th in Cleveland.
I’ve written this before, and although I believe that ‘reality television’ is directed at the mentally impaired, this reality show will not be staged and anything may happen. The only thing I’m unsure of is whether the protests outside of Quicken Loans Arena will be more angry than those inside.
Outside there will likely be groups representing various causes. Because Cleveland’s police department is rated as the worst in the nation regarding its harsh treatment of blacks vs whites, Black Lives Matter will be represented. Flint, Michigan, is approximately 250 miles away from Cleveland. Flint’s residents, primarily black, remain angry at Michigan’s Republican Governor, Rick Snyder. Anti-war protestors will be represented. And of course many will be attending with the attention of venting their anger towards Donald Trump.
Inside, the protests occurring will depend upon one factor; will Republican establishment steal the party’s nomination from Trump. If they choose to make this serious mistake, Trump’s supporters will voice their anger in a raucous manner. It will be ‘real TV,’ and the most entertaining event of the year.
The protests in California are only a precursor to those in Cleveland. The Republican Party’s unfavorable rating is at its lowest in history. For more than seven years it has failed to serve the majority of the American people. Instead of instituting the policies of past great Republicans, it has become a party of extremists and obstructionists. Republican voters are expressing their discontent by supporting Trump. The party itself is responsible for creating “Trumpenstein.”
Republican leadership is focused on winning the election in November. Its focus should be about saving their party. The GOP is fractured, and may break apart before the voting begins.
