If anyone who is involved in any manner with politics believes that Trump resembles Ronald Reagan in any way, they need to seek mental healthcare immediately. The policies of Ronald Reagan, with the exception of ‘trickle-down economics, have not existed since 1992. Reagan never rushed our nation into a war, he was an excellent public speaker, and he offered solutions for the problems facing our nation.
I certainly did not agree with Reagan on many issues, especially in his second term, but he was intelligent and never personally attacked his opponents.
All Republican candidates would love to be compared to their ‘demagogue,’ but none have any resemblance to the man who believed in negotiating treaties, and not rushing into war. By the standards of todays “conservatives,” Reagan was a Democrat.
Today’s GOP is a mixture of old, white men who should have retired years ago, including Mitch McConnell, John McCain, Orin Hatch, and Lindsey Graham, as well as extremists such as Ted Cruz, Rand Paul, and Joni Ernst. They have no ideas which would positively affect the majority. They cling to their party as the nation’s government continues to suffer its demise.
Trump is a Republican in name only. He will not support the negative ideas adopted by Boehner’s House and McConnell’s Senate. The new Speaker, Paul Ryan has yet to prove that he can lead the House forward and quash the obstructionists in its midst. Trump’s party is the ‘Trump Brand.’ He will not take advice from those with knowledge; he claims to know everything. He claims he can ‘do everything,’ but offers no substantive solutions.
An article in the Washington Post, with the nonsensical title of: “Is Trump the last gasp of Reagan’s Republican Party?”: made no sense to me. The Republican Party ceased to exist as a viable member of Congress with the election of George W. Bush in 2000. It worsened in 2010 when the TEA Party or Freedom Caucus gained seats in Congress. This ‘party of no’ destroyed an adequately functioning government. Their refusal to deliberate and compromise destroyed our Democracy.
Trump is desperately attempting to reunite the Republican Party behind his candidacy. He will succeed, for the simple fact that Republicans place their party ahead of the United States of America. Some, including Paul Ryan, are merely grandstanding temporarily to gain national notoriety.
Real Republicans, such as George H.W. Bush, and Mitt Romney will not support Trump. They are proof that others, including John McCain, are merely hypocrites who fail to believe in an old slogan: ‘Country First.’
I wish I could remember who used it in his presidential campaign.
