Republican and ‘Hypocrite’ are synonymous. There has never been greater proof than this year’s election period. Donald Trump has been condemned by nearly every Republican in the party, but now that he is their standard bearer, they not only support him, but claim that he is ‘a better choice than Hillary Clinton.’ Really?
Those who are despicable turncoats are Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and the Chairman of the RNC, Reince Priebus, among dozens of others. At least one Republican has failed to obey the party. She has decided that morality and the future of our nation are more important than a win for the party.
Katrina Elaine Jorgensen is the former Communications Chair with the Young Republicans National Federation. I say ‘former’ because she has become my new favorite member of the GOP; she has resigned rather than support a man she despises. This is a principled Republican from the past, not one in name only as most have become today.
“With the practically fulfilled nomination of Donald Trump as our presidential candidate, I can no longer continue to carry out the duties of this position. My principles will not allow it,” Jorgensen wrote on Facebook. “There is no easy answer to the situation our party is in, but I believe we would do much more for our country by standing together against Donald Trump.”
Ms. Jorgensen continued:
“We have been told for years how we are the future of the party, this is our opportunity to seize that future,” she added. “But if we have instead decided to uphold a man who does not represent us or our views — a man that has belittled war heroes, explicitly stated misogynist beliefs, relied on intimidation of minorities, insulted our international allies, rewarded violence, championed divisive rhetoric and proved completely uneducated in conservative fiscal policy — I cannot participate in that.”
It has been a long time since I praised a Republican. Independents such as myself admire principle, truth, ideas, and service to all Americans, and are not required to agree with every idea they offer. Vetting is a process, not an instant conclusion.
I miss the Republican Party more than you will ever know. Only a small number of Democrats deserve my support, but none of the members of the GOP have earned my respect until now.
Is Ms. Jorgensen the future of the Republican Party? We can only hope. What they offer us now is lies, misdirection, and politics of fear and anger without substance. Younger Republicans are diverse in their demographics, are more centrist than the extremists of today in the TEA Party or Freedom Caucus, and fail to allow religion to be a factor in their political decisions.
Moderates are progressive. Both Republicans and Democrats of the past are the reason why America has moved forward in 60 years, and why it was once a great country. Millennials refuse to accept the dated policies of a fading party, and demand a move forward and not backwards.
Today’s Democrats are closely aligned with Republicans of the 1980’s. Today’s Republicans are more closely aligned with the fascist movement of the 1930’s.
Your choice; your vote. Thank you Ms. Jorgensen; you have renewed my faith.
