In today’s world of ‘political correctness’ and ‘politico-speak,’ in other words refusing to answer a direct question, it is no surprise when party leaders avoid answering direct questions. They do so to avoid one or both of two things; they don’t know the answer, or they don’t want to tell the truth.
For more than two decades the Republican Party has attempted to avoid labels such as racist, bigoted, misogynist, or homophobic. But today’s extremist GOP can no longer deny its prejudices. Their party’s standard bearer, Donald Trump, is openly hateful of multiple groups of Americans. Initially, hundreds of Republicans voiced their opposition to his tirades, but now they have capitulated and admit that they are aligned with their presidential nominee.
On “Meet the Press” Sunday, the biggest hypocrite in the Republican Party failed to call fellow racist Donald Trump for what he is. Moderator Chuck Todd repeatedly asked Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell if his statements about the judge who will hear a lawsuit involving Trump University were racist in content. He continually refused to answer the question directly. McConnell is the senior Senator from Kentucky.
“I don’t agree with what he had to say. This is a man who was born in Indiana. All of us came here from somewhere else,” McConnell said Sunday. “That’s an important part of what makes America work.”
Chuck Todd read a quote from a conservative blogger criticizing the Republican Party, the ‘party of Lincoln,’ for defending a racist candidate.
McConnell, who was a major ‘flip-flopper’ regarding Trump’s candidacy, responded:
“I think the party of Lincoln wants to win the White House,” he said. “The right-of-center world needs to respect the fact that the primary voters have spoken.”
Four times he avoided answering the question, but that’s been McConnell’s style throughout his sordid career.
This lack of honesty to the American people is an act of cowardice and proof than the party has a higher priority than the nation. Recently McConnell claimed that the Republican party is ‘at a high point.’ If offering the American people, Trump is a ‘high note,’ they have set the bar extremely low.
McConnell is one of the principle leaders of the Republican Party, and is therefore representative of the party as a whole. This is not a party anyone but the most brainwashed Republican voters can support. America was a country of principle and hope for all of its nation’s people. To denigrate any group, or an individual for using his first amendment rights to speak his opinion, is not American; it is not democratic; it is the act of a fascist.
When we had a Democratic Republic, our elected officials were intended to support the will of the people. We have moved to an oligarchy, where only the needs and desires of the few are considered. Under Trump the United States would become a plutocracy; rule by the wealthy.
Those Americans who possess the worst traits of humanity; bigotry and prejudice; are to be vilified and discounted as patriots or even true Americans.
What do you see our next president supporting? You or their party?
