A prominent California newspaper posted this message online Thursday; the San Diego Union-Tribune called Trump “unfit to lead the free world.” Their suggestion was to write in the name of Ronald Reagan in Tuesday’s primary. The post continues citing Trump’s “belligerence, casual cruelty, incoherence on policy issues.” Further, they called Reagan the “the Great Communicator,” and Trump “as the Great Excommunicator,”
The board of the Union-Tribune continued: “He wants Muslims banned from the country; a wall built around our southern border; global deals ripped up and renegotiated; America made “great again” through isolationism.”
Virtually they preceded Hillary Clinton’s statements made on Friday. When someone explains the newspaper’s description of him, Trump will surely attack the Union-Tribune, degrading its reputation, and claiming that their truths are indeed falsehoods. This is Trump’s reaction to everything about which he fails to agree; he can’t handle the truth.
Sadly, the truth is that there are no Ronald Reagans, Dwight Eisenhowers, or Teddy Roosevelts in the Republican Party today. The few real Republicans, such as George H.W. Bush, are near the end of their days. The once praised principles of the GOP are virtually non-existent. The party has moved so far to the right that Reagan would be called a Democrat today.
Extremism is not good government. No one in today’s Republican Party is in danger of receiving the label of “Great Communicator.” The truth is that they refuse to deliberate with their Democratic counterparts. A government which fails to compromise does not function, and cannot be labeled a democracy.
The Union-Tribune is to be commended for a brilliant idea. I wonder how many Californians who claim to be Republicans will heed their suggestion. It would send a message not only to Trump, but to the entire Republican Party establishment.
