I am not the biggest Mitt Romney fan, but if he were the Republican Party’s nominee for the presidency, I would not be as frightened as I am by even considering a Donald Trump win in November. Romney has character, and is displaying honesty rarely seen from Republican politicians.
Mr. Romney denounced Trump and added his doubts about Ted Cruz.
“I find this so troubling, and I know a lot of folks are saying, ‘Mitt just get off your high horse on this and get behind the guy.’ But these things are personal. I love this country. I love the founders. I love what this country is built upon and its values and seeing this is breaking my heart,” Romney said. The 2012 nominee was visibly emotional and appeared to tear up when making the remarks.
Most Republicans have revealed their hypocrisy by reversing their strong anti-Trump positions and supporting him. Mitch McConnell who once berated Trump for his anti-American rhetoric, now supports him and refuses to admit that he is a racist. Paul Ryan may be the biggest hypocrite of all. He claims to be a man who possesses exceptional moral character, and, although he recently stated that Trump must not be representative of the Republican Party, he now endorses the failed businessman.
The list of cowards who have lined up behind the worst presidential candidate in history is long. Romney and the Bush family are standouts for their continued opposition to the new Republican Party leader; they will not attend the convention in July.
Romney ignored criticism for not accepting the party’s presumptive nominee. He is one of the few members of the GOP who is truly loyal to the Party. Supporting a man who in completely unqualified and regurgitates anti-American ideas cannot be allowed to become the leader of the free world.
The Republican Party will never be respected until it discovers new leadership which possesses the principles of great past Republicans. The party must reject extremists who have rendered our government dysfunctional. The label “conservative” has become a synonym with ‘obstructionist.’ Our government only works when both parties work together for the benefit of the majority. Without deliberation and compromise a Democratic Republic cannot exist.
Romney has proven that he is a leader. A leader is a man or woman whose ideas and actions continue to hold principle and virtue above all else. A leader rejects criticism when he or she refuses to lose the courage of their convictions and join the masses. McConnell, Ryan, and others are not leaders; they are hypocrites who place their party above the United States of America.
Donald Trump is the result of failed Republican leadership which has allowed a once Grand Old Party to devolve into a fractured group led by obstructionists who fail to believe in the nation created by our founding fathers. They have created a divided nation which has become fearful, angry, and violent.
As an Independent, I am pleased that a few true Republicans such as Mitt Romney continue to stand for the party of their predecessors.
