How the Candidates Responded to the Tragedy in Orlando

Clinton and Trump

On CBS This Morning Donald Trump was interviewed by telephone regarding the massacre of at least 50 innocent members of the LGBT community early Sunday morning in Orlando, Florida. Once again he called for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. When Gayle King countered by asking him how that would have prevented a man who was born in America from murdering those in Orlando, he claimed that all Muslims are becoming ‘radicalized’ by others who come from Syria and Iraq. Need I say anything more about our racist Republican leader?

Hillary Clinton previously labeled those who support ISIS and Al Qaeda as “radical jihadists.” This is what she is saying today.

“From my perspective, it matters what we do more than what we say,” Clinton said on CNN’s “New Day.” “And it mattered we got bin Laden, not what name we called him. I have clearly said we — whether you call it radical jihadism or radical Islamism, I’m happy to say either. I think they mean the same thing.”

Labels are important to Trump who has constantly criticized the former Secretary of State. I agree with Ms. Clinton. It doesn’t matter what religious extremists are called. We call the KKK a racist group, we don’t call them what they are; “radical Christian extremists.”

Trump also said that “this is just the beginning.” Ms. King once again asked him if attitudes such as his incited more young Muslims to be radicalized. His response was “did you see what happened in Orlando?”

Ms. Clinton continued: “What I won’t do, because I think it is dangerous for our efforts to defeat this threat, is to demonize and demagogue and declare war on an entire religion,” she said. “That plays right into ISIS’ hands.”

Clinton hit Trump by name, saying, “I think that Donald Trump’s rhetoric is quite dangerous to our country.”

She also renewed her call for a ban on assault rifles and high-output magazines which have a singular purpose; to kill multiple individuals in a short period of time.

Muhammad Ali was buried last Friday. The most famous man in the world was a devout Muslim and a symbol of those who are true followers of Islam. It’s unreasonable to promote hatred because of a relatively small number of thugs who use religion for their own purpose.

Religious extremists, primarily Christians and Muslims, have been the force behind the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent people for generations. Hiding behind the words of Muhammad or Jesus Christ, atrocities continue around the world.

Our nation is filled with fear, anger, and hatred. The United States of America no longer exists. We are divided by ‘red and blue states,’ created by ambitious politicians. Not since the Civil War has our nation experienced such an extreme separation among its people.

The truth is that politicians have ‘radicalized’ all Americans. All issues have become ‘black or white,’ with no interest in ‘shades of gray.’ Tolerance and compassion, once encouraged by our leaders, have been replaced by intolerance and coldness. Although the Constitution guarantees individual freedom for all Americans, our politicians have become selective and ignore the meaning of our founding fathers.

Each of us must pray in their own way for the victims, families, and friends of those who lost their lives too early while celebrating life.
