A growing number of Republicans are joining forces to defeat Donald Trump at the convention next month. They plan to cast their votes for anyone but Trump using the “conscience” clause in the by-laws. While many in the Republican establishment have displayed their hypocrisy by supporting him, true Republicans are denouncing Trump for his racism, bigotry, and lack of qualifications to become our 45th president.
Trump dismissed these patriots, claiming that: “There’s a little movement. And I just heard today where it’s coming from. It’s coming from people that have been badly defeated,” said Trump. At another point, he cited “a couple of guys who were badly defeated” who are “trying to organize maybe like a little bit of a delegate revolt.”
Of course he is referring to Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz. Trump may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but he never forgets criticism, and remains vindictive.
The truth is that many members of the RNC are joining together to make one last effort to derail the failed businessman. They are joined by true Republicans who value both the nation and their party. Mitt Romney has his own group of Trump detractors, and the entire Bush family will not attend the convention.
Polls offered by a media which must sell advertisement are misleading. If taken for fact, the American people would believe that Trump and Hillary Clinton are close. The fact is that the only important news in politics is if Bernie Sanders can convince his followers to switch their support to Clinton.
Trump leads in a single demographic; white men. White men offer him a small bloc of the voting public. Today’s America is truly a ‘melting pot.’ More families are composed of mixed race or ethnicity than pure Caucasian. Trump has no hope of gaining popularity with Hispanics, women, millennials, Muslims, or the LGBT community. The working class will not support him; he is a member of the ‘one-percent,’ and is unable to relate to the majority of our nation’s people.
Trump’s own campaign staff is unable to control him, and is left in the dark frequently. Trump remains ‘Trump.’ He promised to appear ‘more presidential,’ but he continues to be the class clown who is not funny; he is an embarrassment to men and women of intellect.
I believe that only one result will come from a Trump nomination; a fractured Republican Party. Prior to Trump, the GOP was divided. Extremists who call themselves the TEA Party or the Freedom Caucus refused to operate in a manner supported by a Democratic Republic. Just saying “no” is not good government.
True Republicans failed to take a stand and refuse these reactionaries the power they sought to destroy our government. John Boehner and Mitch McConnell proved themselves to be weak leaders and failed their constituents and the American People.
Now with Trump as the party’s standard bearer the party is divided into four different factions. Trump will lose badly in November; possibly worse than Barry Goldwater in 1964. Then the party will be forced to rebuild.
It must begin with forward-thinking leadership who will address the multiple problems facing the GOP. The ‘followers’ must be removed from power and replaced with moderates who will deliberate and compromise to solve the many serious problems facing our nation.
