North Carolina remains under attack for its anti-gay laws. Governor Pat McCrory stands behind his legislature although multiple corporations have removed present and future business from the state. North Carolina is also under indictment by the Federal Government for violation of civil rights.
What interests me is that McCrory is up for reelection this year. His challenger is Democrat Roy Cooper, the state’s Attorney General. Although Republicans now control the state, mistakes by McCrory just might cost him the election in November.
“The governor continues to hurt our economy by his doubling and tripling down on House Bill 2,” Cooper said North Carolina Bar Association annual meeting in Charlotte. “He has made sure that we’ve lost hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of jobs. That’s wrong for this state.”
McCrory responded by claiming that North Carolina’s economy is strong.
The law requires everyone to use the public bathroom which corresponds to the sex on their birth certificates. Therefore, transgendered individuals would be excluded from using bathrooms in which they feel most comfortable.
The law was in response to local governments adding anti-discrimination bills to protect members of the LGBT community; laws which McCrory objected to.
“A boy who is a boy who thinks he’s a girl should not go into the girl’s shower,” McCrory said. “Roy Cooper believes a boy who thinks he’s a girl and still has the anatomy of a boy can go into a girl’s shower in our middle schools and in our high schools and our universities. I strongly disagree with those values and the courts are going to now decide.”
What a surprise, a Republican who is homophobic. I find it strange that Republicans shout loudly about the Constitutional rights of Americans until it involves something they do not support. I also find it fascinating that if the Christian religious right says “jump,” they ask how far.
Will North Carolina be another victim of the ‘Trump effect?’ It is a definite possibility that the state could return to the control of Democrats. “Money talks and bullshit walks.” The bottom line will be state revenue. In addition to companies who now refuse to operate in North Carolina, the NBA may cancel an upcoming all-star game which brings in millions of dollars to the state.
