After the 2012 election, one of the changes in the Republican Party promised by RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was to seek support from the Hispanic community. The fact is that he failed, but even if he had made the effort, it would hall have been for naught thanks to the party’s leader, Donald Trump.
Lionel Sosa is a Texas-based supporter of the Republican Party, who is instrumental in its attempts to attract Hispanic voters; or I should say “was.”
Sosa said the following if Trump is given the GOP nomination:
“I’ll have to bid farewell, hoping that one day soon, it comes to its senses,” he wrote Tuesday in the San Antonio Express-News. “Here’s my thinking. This madness could be temporary because our nominee is not really a Republican. Not a real conservative. He’s just a shark, a self-promoter out to see how far his out-of-control ego can take him.
“Instead of ‘Tear down this wall,’ the party promotes a new and bigger wall,” Sosa added. “A thousand points of light has been replaced by a thousand points of anger. In place of compassionate conservatism, our nominee promotes callousness, extremism and racism. And instead of a unifier, the party now cheers the ultimate ‘us against them’ proponent. Divisiveness incarnate.”
One-by-one members of the Republican establishment have removed themselves from Trump’s dark cloud, and some from the Party itself.
Hopefully the American people will vote with their intellect in November, and our nation will not be plagued with Trump for four years. His candidacy has resulted in great destruction to the Republican Party, and we cannot allow that to happen to the United States of America.
“I could try to sell the real Republican Party but that would do no good, because right now, Republicans need Donald Trump and Donald Trump needs Republicans,” he said. “It’s one in the same. So ‘Republican’ is Donald Trump. Can I sell that? No. To Latinos? Absolutely not.” Sosa.
As the divisions within the GOP continue to grow, I have more questions regarding the future of the Republican Party than the election. What will it look like in 2017? Will it exist in some form, or will it become two, or three separate parties? Could we experience irreconcilable differences between Trump supporters, Trump detractors, and a third group, the TEA Party?
Extremism has destroyed our government; will it destroy the Republican Party?
It appears as though Trump is losing more supporters and more voters each week; he is moving backwards; and the convention has not yet begun.
One month ago I believed that Trump could not be stopped at the convention; now, I’m not so sure. Hundreds of delegates have declared that they intend to ‘vote their conscience,’ which means denying Trump their votes.
This is real drama. I am a big fan of “House of Cards,” and “Scandal,” but the writers of those shows could not have dreamed up the situation developing within the Republican Party.
If you don’t plan to watch the convention as it happens, set your DVR’s for July 18th through July 21st. If you are a fan of “Reality Television,” which is anything but ‘real,’ you’ll get a chance to watch a show which is truly unscripted, and it will be happening both inside and outside of Quicken Loans Arena.
