I thought Clarence Thomas was a justice on the Supreme Court; albeit a poor one. He sounds like he works in the NFL League Office, or is an owner of one of the teams.
The controversial puppet of deceased Justice Antonin Scalia was angry that five of the justices struck down Texas’ anti-abortion law. He became even more angry when his fellow justices supported the denial of gun rights to those who harm their loved ones and former intimate relations.
“Gun ownership rights can be denied to people who commit reckless acts of domestic violence,” the Supreme Court ruled Monday.
Thomas wasn’t happy; his beloved NRA lost the support of the majority. His dissent offers proof that he is not concerned with the truth, he simply wants to support gun manufacturers and gun sellers.
“We treat no other constitutional right so cavalierly,” he said in his dissent. “In construing the statute before us expansively so that causing a single minor reckless injury or offensive touching can lead someone to lose his right to bear arms forever, the court continues to relegate the Second Amendment to a second-class right.”
This man must live in a different world than the rest of America. More than 33,000 lives are taken with the use of a gun in the United States each year. The majority of those lives are women and children who died at the hand of a family member or an individual whom with they had an intimate relationship.
Domestic violence has yet to be addressed adequately. Not only does the act itself damage an individual, or individuals, the long term effects on family members is unimaginable. For decades this unforgivable situation has occurred as law enforcement and the judicial system turned their backs on the victims.
Most baby boomers such as myself grew up in dysfunctional families. Many of our fathers had returned from WWII with no opportunity to obtain adequate employment. PTSD was not an issue post WWII, and many husbands returned home in need of mental health treatment when none was available. No one understood the effects of long term warfare. Tens of thousands of soldiers became civilian alcoholics.
My own father beat my mother endlessly. I was only seven or eight when it escalated. I tried to defend her, but only succeeded in further angering my biological father, and receiving blows myself. He would frequently chase me as I ran from the house to call the police. Laws were ineffective in the 1950’s. The police could not enter our apartment unless he allowed them in. Nothing ever happened until my mother finally divorced him.
During those times there is no doubt in my mind that if he had a gun he would have shot my mother and likely myself as well.
Thomas is a tool. Hopefully, rumors about his retirement next year are valid. I watched the hearings after he was nominated by George H.W. Bush. He should never have been confirmed. Instead, Anita Hill was verbally attacked with no one to defend her. That day she became a victim of domestic emotional violence by the Senate.
Come to think of it, I have never heard a single Republican denounce domestic violence. Court records show that Trump abused his first wife, Ivana. Later she denied her deposition when a settlement was reached. Money talks.
