Remember When a Presidential Election was About the Issues?

Clinton and Trump

I know many of you are too young to remember, but at one time in our nation’s history, the general election was about the issues and not personal attacks. As recently as 1992 when Bill Clinton was challenging George H. W. Bush, challenges facing the American people were the focus of the two candidate’s campaigns.

Clinton believed that the American economy had ‘run aground;’ Bush believed it was fundamentally strong.

Bush claimed that the wealthy should not have their taxes increased; Clinton thought that they should pay their fair share.

Bush favored cutting federal programs with the exception of funding for the military. Clinton suggested that the nation needed more government spending to stimulate the economy.

Bush believed that restrictions on big business should be removed to allow increased profits. Clinton would seek additional restrictions on big business, to force energy conservation and protect the environment.

While Bush favored free trade, Clinton believed that our nation must install certain safe guards so that everyone ‘played fairly.’

Bush believed that job training and medical care should be based on tax incentives. Clinton stated that employers should be required to provide medical insurance and job training for their workers or pay extra taxes to the Government to do it for them.

As we all know, Clinton won the election. When he left office after his second term, our nation experienced a surplus for the first time in decades.

Today, only one party speaks about the issues, and it’s not the party of Donald Trump.

The media isn’t helping to cure our deteriorating political system. They are constantly reporting stories about Hillary Clinton’s alleged lack of credibility. Ms. Clinton has served as the First Lady, a Senator from New York, and as Secretary of State. To expect perfection after so many years of service to our nation is unrealistic. She has never been charged with actions forbidding her return to the White House. In fact, her overall record is extremely commendable. She is truly the most qualified man or woman ever to seek the presidency.

Why isn’t the media discussing her stand on the issues? She is addressing everything from income inequality to judicial reform. She is a defender of women’s rights, and believes in fair taxation. She would improve the Affordable Care Act, and make higher education attainable for all or our young men and women. Ms. Clinton would find a reasonable and fair way for our nation to retain nearly 12 million undocumented workers by making it possible for them to obtain legal residence. With her experience as a negotiator, she will be able to bond with our allies, and even some less friendly nations, to form a coalition to defeat ISIS.

What is Trump saying about the real issues facing our nation? Nothing. He wants to build a wall between Mexico and the United States; ban all Muslims from entering our nation; and begin a nuclear war in the Middle East.

Don’t be fooled by those who call themselves “newsmen,” or “newswomen,” they are interested in sensationalism and selling advertising. The truth will only be found on blogs such as mine.

Hillary Clinton will be a great president. Donald Trump would be a disaster for our nation and the world.
