Trump’s choices for vice-president were limited. No credible Republican would accept his selection. His choice of Mike Pence enhances Trump’s personal beliefs, and their union is a perfect ‘marriage.’
Trump is openly a racist, bigot, and a xenophobe. Pence is a religious extremist who is a raving misogynist, and a homophobe. Perfect. They ‘complete each other.’
Trump hates Hispanics, Muslims, and as he pointed out in one of his rallies, he has one “African American supporter,” when he called out to the crowd: “Where is my African American?”
Pence is more covert about his true nature. When he was in Congress, he ranked in the top ten of extremists. After attempting to shut down our government if Planned Parenthood was allowed to continue receiving funds from the government, he signed his name to one of the nation’s most stringent abortion laws.
In Indiana, under the pretense of “protecting the religious values of Christians,” he signed into law a bill which allowed businesses to refuse service to same sex couples, and act of pure homophobia.
Pence also joined with Trump and attempted to pass a bill which would have officially instituted English as our national language, disallowing millions of Spanish-speaking Hispanics their right to vote.
We understand why Trump chose Pence instead of his true supporters, Chris Christie or Newt Gingrich; he needed certain things they could not offer. Pence is not simply conservative; he is a reactionary. Joining with his other TEA Party members, he moved so far to the right that he became a destructive force in our nation’s capital. He is also a favorite of the Koch brothers, and Trump desperately needs money.
Why did Pence accept, when he was an avid supporter of fellow evangelist, Ted Cruz? Simple. He is up for reelection in Indiana, and his favorability rating is only 40 percent. He barely won his last election, defeating his Democratic opponent by just 3.5 percent. Pence seeks to retain the perks of remaining a professional politician.
Political experts, and, yes, I include myself, doubt that Pence will have a serious effect on Trump’s campaign. His only value is his appeal to conservatives and evangelists. Ignoring these minimal gains, he will simply be a puppet for the failed businessman.
Of course, I am disappointed; my choice was Newt. He and Trump were even greater soulmates than Trump and Prince. Both have been married three times; both have had controversial and questionable pasts in business; and both are known philanderers. They are truly brethren of the worst variety.
Barring a revolution by the Republican faithful, “TrumpPence” will be the Republican ticket by the end of the week. The question is; how can the delegates at the convention be proud of their representatives. They offer the worst of America to voters. They deny the Constitution and seek a return to the “bad old days” when “blacks knew their place,” gays remained “in the closet,” and women were subservient to men. They would reinstitute policies which were inhumane. If a Hispanic was caught attempting to cross from Mexico to the United States, they would advocate drowning him in the Rio Grande.
Congratulations, Republicans; I did not believe you could sink any lower. I was wrong, and I admit it.
