Bashing “All White” Republicans

Republicans (4)

The cast of Saturday Night Live had fun searching for “people of color” at the Republican Convention. It was actually very simple; they were easy to spot in a ‘sea of white.’ Recently Speaker Paul Ryan took a ‘selfie’ with Republican interns in Washington. The entire group was composed of young, attractive, white men and women. Democratic interns are striking back.

A photo of interns from the Democratic party looked like America. A very diverse group drastically contrasted with the Republican ‘selfie.’

“Since the photo went viral, sources from Jimmy Fallon to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman to Teen Vogue have criticized Republicans for the party’s lack of diversity,” The Washington Post’s Elise Viebeck reports.

Several Democratic congressmen and women posted opposing photos of their interns.

Rachel Sadon of the website dcist, captured the ensuing fallout:

“In the face of the blinding whiteness of Speaker of the House Paul Ryan’s selfie with a crop of Capitol Hill interns, a group of Democratic interns stopped shielding their eyes long enough to take their own photos. And well, they pretty much speak for themselves.”

There has never been a doubt that the Republican Party is the party of old, white men and women, but the fact that no one of color is invited to the younger group of Republicans is a little unnerving. How can they claim to represent the American people when they won’t even allow anyone other than white men and women to be interns?

Okay, I admit that I may be making more of a picture than necessary. However, the truth cannot be denied. If you watch the Democratic Convention next week, the delegates in attendance will be far more diverse. Democrats encourage the support of all races and religions, while Republicans have failed to reach out to those demographics.

The Republican standard bearer, Donald Trump, rejects people of color, and Hispanic immigrants. I remember watching a part of one rally when Trump spoke to the crowd and asked: “Where is my African American?” Sad.
