Donald Trump lacks the intelligence to know when he has embarrassed himself. After Mr. Khizr Khan spoke at the Democratic Convention, Trump immediately attacked him for speaking the truth.
On Monday Mr. Khan and his wife, Ghazala Khan, appeared on “New Day,” on CNN. He was pleading with all Americans to embrace their Muslim neighbors in peace and prevent radicalizing young men and women. He once again denounced Trump’s message of hatred.
“Communities coming together is the solution,” he said. “We are as concerned as Donald Trump is about the safety of this country. We are a testament to the goodness of this country.”
Mr. Khan also said that he’s received an outpouring of support in response to the controversy, highlighting his “email box full of messages from prominent Republicans” who have criticized Trump for his remarks.
As we all know, Trump’s weak temperament cannot accept criticism, even when it’s the truth. When Mr. Khan originally spoke, he referred to Trump’s own words. It was also true when he said that Trump had never read the Constitution, and offered to lend him a copy of his own. A man’s own words either make him great or destroy him, but Trump just doesn’t get it.
“I really want to maintain mine and my family’s dignity,” Trump responded to the criticism during the interview on Twitter. He wrote, “Mr. Khan, who does not know me, viciously attacked me from the stage of the DNC and is now all over T.V. doing the same – Nice!”
Really? “Viciously?” Mr. Khan simply reprimanded Trump for his vile and divisive rhetoric.
The Khans, whose son Army Captain Humayun Khan was killed in Baghdad in 2004, moved to the United States from Pakistan when their son was just two-years-old. Unlike Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, and others who uttered words of anger and hatred at the Republican Convention, Mr. Khan was impressive as he offered American principles of patriotism, understanding, and brotherly love.
Among those who praised Mr. Khan was Jeb Bush.
“This is so incredibly disrespectful of a family that endured the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Jeb Bush, a Trump rival in the 2016 GOP primary, said on Twitter Sunday evening.
Hillary Clinton offered her own opinion regarding the incident.
“To have Trump do what he did, I don’t know where the bounds are,” Clinton said. “I don’t know where the bottom is.”
I doubt that we have seen how low Trump will go. Every time he is criticized, he immediately lashes out his accuser without thinking about what he might say. He is incapable of simply saying “everyone is entitled to his own opinion,” he is compelled to viciously attack all of his detractors.
House Speaker Ryan, R-Wisconsin, said in a statement, “Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Khan was one such brave example. His sacrifice — and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan — should always be honored. Period.”
Mr. Khan called for all prominent and patriotic Americans to publicly denounce Trump and his damage to the fabric of America. Finally, he succinctly defined Trump in a single sentence.
“He is a black soul, and this is totally unfit for the leadership of this country,” Khan said.
