Donald Trump’s entire campaign originated with two promises to his supporters. He called Hispanic immigrants “criminals and rapists,” and promised to deport more than 11 million undocumented workers. Then he promised to build a wall between the entire border of Mexico and the United States. Now, he may have changed his mind, in a desperate move to acquire a portion of the Hispanic vote.
In a meeting with Hispanic leaders, Trump hinted that he may be changing his mind, and is considering alternatives. He never said the word “legalization,” but those present believed that was the inference.
Personally, I don’t believe him; he has yet to tell the truth about anything. However, if I were a Trump supporter, would I continue to remain loyal if he ‘flip-flops’ on his basic promises? What about conservatives who reject any manner of legal residence for eleven million people who remain in limbo? Are Trump’s new campaign manager and campaign CEO helping or destroying any chance of recovering from the debacle in which he now exists?
“What I’m certain about is that he did not make a firm commitment yesterday, or the meeting the other day, about what he will do with that,” Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions said on CBS News when asked whether Trump still supports deporting all 11 million. “But he did listen, and he’s talking about it.”
In September of 2015 on “60 Minutes,” Trump promised his supporters action if he was elected.
SCOTT PELLEY: “You’re rounding them all up?”
TRUMP: “We’re rounding ’em up in a very humane way, in a very nice way. And they’re going to be happy because they want to be legalized. And, by the way, I know it doesn’t sound nice. But not everything is nice.”
During a February debate, he said: “We have at least 11 million people in this country that came in illegally,” he said. “They will go out. They will come back — some will come back, the best, through a process. They have to come back legally.”
Once again Trump is apparently proving to the American people that he does not know the difference between the truth and a lie. He is the epitome of the adage; “if his lips are moving, he is lying.”
It is highly possible that by reversing his promise to his most ardent racist supporters that he will alienate them. In addition, if he takes the position of offering legal residence, he will also alienate most of the Republican base. The result will be a net loss. The addition of Steve Bannon and the promotion of Kellyanne Conway will likely prove that Trump has extremely poor judgement. But, in all fairness, desperation requires just that.
Trump continues to have more coverage by the media than any other candidate in our nation’s history. However, this type of coverage is not helpful, as it has been in the past when they were partly responsible for Trump winning the GOP nomination.
The final truth: Trump is obviously less intelligent than I imagined. He has lost control of his own campaign to a white supremacist in Bannon, and an ambitious woman in Conway.
The ‘fat lady’ has completed her warm-up, and is about to croon.
