Although Republicans never like to tell the truth, the fact is that their party is forever divided. The simple way to define the split is those who support Donald Trump, and those who denounce him. It is more complicated than that, but this is the fact that everyone can see. If Trump is elected, the GOP cannot be saved. Republicans who refuse to be labeled racist, bigoted, xenophobic, homophobic and misogynists will continue to separate themselves from a man who would be the worst president in American history.
A Hillary Clinton victory will allow those Republicans who want their party to return to a functioning organization, which represents all of the American people, to reorganize and find effective leadership. They will drive away the extremists who choose not to govern effectively through deliberation and compromise.
Many ‘true’ Republicans agree more with Hillary Clinton’s views regarding trade and financial growth than they do the vague offerings of Donald Trump. They also reject extremist rants such as claiming that severe weather or the spreading of disease is the result of same-sex marriage or the practice of abortion.
Within the GOP there exists a group of realists. These men and women understand that a revitalization of their party must be more important than winning a single election. Because of Trump’s candidacy, Democrats have a tremendous opportunity to regain control of the Senate, and will likely gain multiple seats in the House.
The first step will be finding effective leaders. Reince Priebus, a puppet of the Koch brothers, has failed his party for more than eight years. Mitch McConnell is the worst Senate Majority Leader in history. Under his reign, nothing has been accomplished of significance; a seat on the Supreme Court remains vacant.
John Boehner lacked the strength and courage to control the House. A small group of extremists were allowed to make the House entirely dysfunctional. It doesn’t appear the Paul Ryan is having any more success than his predecessor.
Extremism destroys democracy, and has forced our government into total gridlock. Moderates are responsible for all the successes in our nation. Deliberation and compromise create legislation which serves all of our nation’s people, not just special interests.
The last two effective Republican presidents, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, worked across the aisle with Democrats and helped our Democratic Republic achieve success. Since 2000, our leaders have moved our nation into an oligarchy. During the last four years of The George W. Bush Administration, it moved even farther away from a democracy, and neared a plutocracy.
America will never be a great nation until all of our citizens share common concerns for each other. We must return to a nation of compassionate, tolerant, and understanding men and women who reject their own personal needs as their only goal. We must be a nation of people who once again support all of the Constitution, and not just the parts of it we agree with. Our corporations must support the welfare of their employees; not only those in executive capacity. Outrageous profits must be replaced by thriving businesses who are willing to share their success with those whose efforts are truly responsible for that success.
We need a return of the real Republican Party. A loss by Donald Trump will be the first step to reconstruction for the GOP.
