Rachel Maddow Lets Kellyanne Conway Bury Herself

Maddow

If you’ve ever seen Kellyanne Conway on Bill Maher, or some other network other than FOX, you know that she loves to talk, and believes she can ‘spin’ her way out of any situation. Trump’s latest campaign manager appeared on the Rachel Maddow show Wednesday evening. Although she did put her ‘spin’ on some issues, and refused to directly answer other questions, for the most part she was far more responsive than her boss.

When asked by Maddow how she became the first female campaign manager in the Republican Party, Conway said:

“I think I got the job through the way Donald Trump has promoted women in the Trump Corporation for decades, through merit.”

Oh that clever woman; attempting to claim that Trump is not a misogynist, when the facts speak otherwise.

She went on to spin the truth and claim that Trump has actually offered substance for his proposals. The truth is that he remains vague regarding the few issues he actually addresses.

While defending Trump’s attacks, Conway criticized Hillary Clinton for calling pro-life Republicans ‘terrorists,’ and then lied and said that Hillary never called ISIS ‘terrorists.’ But Rachel didn’t allow her to get away with this lie.

Hillary did call pro-lifers terrorists, and killing doctors and nurses who work at abortion clinics are acts of terrorism. Religion does not belong in our politics. She has frequently referred to ISIS as terrorists. What I wish Maddow would have said is that Hillary knows more about ISIS than Trump ever will; she has experience in national security and foreign relations; he lacks experience and knowledge in all areas of government.

When Maddow asked her if Trump has ever apologized to Judge Curiel, Conway lied and said that ‘she didn’t know.’ When Maddow asked her if he apologized to the Khan family, she said that he did last week at a rally, but she doesn’t know if he has personally contacted them.

This is strange. A qualified campaign manager knows more about the candidate than the candidates themselves. Campaign managers run the lives of their bosses as they objectively observe them with the intent of controlling what they say and do.

When asked if Trump continues to believe that all Muslims should be restricted from entering the United States, she talked around the question and eventually confused me as to what her position was. The only thing I understood was that Trump now believes that Muslims coming from countries known for supporting terrorism should be banned.

Maddow reminded her that the Muslim cell which conducted the attacks on 9/11 had their origin in Germany. Would he include Germany?

Conway: “But with that particular instance, I’d have to go back and review what we knew about each of them at the time before I answer your question completely.  But the general policy is what he says it is, which is…”

Maddow reminded her that Trump’s written and spoken policy is to ban all Muslims. She asked her if that has changed. There was no clear response as Conway attempted to attack Hillary claiming that she “memorized the list of 22 flip-flops that Hillary Clinton has made on policy, and they have nothing to do even with the corrupt Clinton Foundation State Department pay-to-play connection, they have to do with policy.” Once again playing the Trump game of attack, attack, attack.

Then they arrived at my favorite part, when Trump said we must have ‘vetting’ similar to the cold war. The ‘vetting’ he’s talking about is ‘racial profiling.’ Conway obviously had no knowledge of what occurred when our Congress attempted to implement such a policy. President Truman vetoed the act; Congress overrode that veto. Eventually the Supreme Court struck down the law.

Conway proved herself to be another Republican who does not like facts and denies the truth. In a battle of wits, she was unarmed against the greater intellect of Maddow.

I was finally able to understand why Trump’s campaign staff has allowed him to lose his own campaign. Conway was promoted from within. She is simply proving that, like her boss, she actually knows nothing about how the government of the United States works. Her credentials are from her abilities as a ‘pollster,’ not a politician.

The interview was interesting, and disappointing. The only thing I’m certain of is that for a short time, Conway was able to keep Trump on a short leash; it couldn’t last forever.
