Early in his campaign, Donald Trump called Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain a “loser.” He also claimed that he could not be called a “war hero” because he had been captured. So why is McCain supporting Trump in the November election? Good question. During his campaign in 2008, his campaign slogan was “Country First.” He no longer believes in that motto.
McCain will likely face Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick in November to retain his seat in the senate. She is regarded as a serious challenger, and at the moment the polls have McCain ahead by eight points in the ‘red state.’ But will that hold?
“The fact that he continues to support Donald Trump in spite of the fact that Trump insulted him, in spite of the fact that Trump insulted a Gold Star family, shows that he’s changed. There was a day that he would have stood up for that family, would have stood up for himself,” Kirkpatrick said in an interview.
“It’s baffling to me that he continues to support Trump in spite of the horrible racist, sexist, discriminating things that Trump said,” she added.
If Trump’s numbers continue to slide, will McCain’s? Has he placed his fate in the hands of Trump’s campaign? He is no longer a ‘maverick,’ McCain places his party first before his nation and his state.
Kirkpatrick may offer the best explanation; revealing his desperation, and the truth about John McCain.
“He’s pandering to the Republican electorate to try to get votes he probably would never get if he comes out and denounces Trump in the primary,” Ward said in an interview at a dimly lit chophouse here. “He is much more aligned with Hillary Clinton than he is with Donald Trump.”
McCain is a perfect example of why we need term limits for Congress. He has outlived his usefulness, and has no interest in serving the people of our nation. He is the past, and we must let him go.
Which side will McCain be on in 2017 when the party splits into two or three factions. We can eliminate the TEA Party; McCain does have some principles. Will he align himself with pro-Trump or anti-Trump Republicans?
