Respected Republicans, including Mitt Romney, George H.W. Bush, and Susan Collins, have refused to support Donald Trump’s candidacy. This has surprised many, but not those of us who follow politics closely. Washington is split with those whose ambitions precede the future of our nation, and those whose intention is to serve the American people. The former three Republicans, and many more, have served, or are serving our nation well. Unfortunately, today’s GOP leadership has placed their party first, and the nation second. Individuals such as Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus have displayed their hypocrisy, and should be removed from our political system.
Arizona is considered a “red state.” The Arizona Republic began publishing in 1890. It has always supported the Republican candidate for the presidency. This year is an historic moment for the publication. It has endorsed Hillary Clinton, and offered harsh criticism of Donald Trump.
“Since The Arizona Republic began publication in 1890, we have never endorsed a Democrat over a Republican for president. Never. This reflects a deep philosophical appreciation for conservative ideals and Republican principles.
“This year is different.
“The 2016 Republican candidate is not conservative and he is not qualified.
“That’s why, for the first time in our history, The Arizona Republic will support a Democrat for president.”
As the editorial continued, it further explained its rationale.
“She does not casually say things that embolden our adversaries and frighten our allies. Her approach to governance is mature, confident and rational.
“That cannot be said of her opponent.
“Clinton retains her composure under pressure. She’s tough. She doesn’t back down.
“Trump responds to criticism with the petulance of verbal spit wads.
“That’s beneath our national dignity.
“When the president of the United States speaks, the world expects substance. Not a blistering tweet.”
They are repeating my assertions over the last 15 months, and I applaud them. There exists little honesty in our political system; both parties are filled with far too many men and women whose ambitions are the priority. It is refreshing to hear one member of the media be truthful regarding the many flaws Donald Trump offers the American people.
“Yet despite her flaws,” the newspaper wrote, “Clinton is the superior choice.”
Any individual who has served her nation for nearly 30 years will not be perfect. Hillary has served in three relevant capacities; one of which was as First Lady. Monday night Trump claimed that she had accomplished nothing, but history proves that Bill Clinton’s Administration was one of the most successful in history. She also served admirably in the Senate, and as Secretary of State.
This opens up a possibility that Clinton could turn the “red” state of Arizona into a “blue” state.
