I am not blaming Donald Trump for the destruction of the Republican Party; he is merely the result of years of failure by GOP leadership. However, by allowing him to receive the party’s nomination for the highest office in the land, they have guaranteed irreparable damage to the Republican brand for years to come.
No one who believes in the America of our forefathers supports the evil which is Donald Trump. With Trump as the GOP standard bearer, the Republican Party is labeled racist, bigoted, Islamophobic, and anti-woman. Allowing the party to be represented by a man who lacks moral character, and fails to offer the principles once cherished by past Republicans, will result in rejection by the largest voting bloc in our nation; millennials.
Whether Trump wins or loses in November, the best Republicans can hope for is a two-way split in the party. Nothing can heal the rift between anti-Trump Republicans and those who support him. The philosophical differences are too extreme.
The ‘Trump effect’ will not end at the federal level. The rejection of Donald Trump will affect state and local elections as well. State legislatures, which have been dominated by Republicans for years, will see a growing number of Democrats occupying their seats. Republican voters will remain angry regardless of a Trump win or loss. Party loyalty will be diminished, and Republican leadership will fail to attract younger voters, especially women.
Anti-Trump Republicans do not fear a Clinton presidency nearly as much as losing control of the Senate. The American people would benefit greatly from a Democratically controlled senate. Removing Mitch McConnell from his position as Senate Majority Leader would change the senior legislative body from a “do-nothing” group to a “can-do” group. McConnell is one of the ingredients within the GOP who is responsible for the creation of “Trumpenstein.”
It remains to be seen how seriously the Trump effect will damage the Republican Party. Will it remain intact in 2017? Will they find a new Chairman of the RNC who will take the party in a direction which returns the GOP to the principled party which once fought for less government and individual rights? Can it remove the extremists from their midst who have controlled the party for the last six years?
It is possible that by permanently dividing the GOP, Trump may be the cure for the Republican Party which has been in turmoil for more than a decade. However, it will require strong leadership, and the elimination of hypocrites such as John McCain, Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Reince Priebus, and others. Continuing to place party first will not serve the American people or win elections.
