Thousands of writers such as myself have written articles about Donald Trump’s sexist attitude towards women. He has been permanently, and accurately labeled as a misogynist. He has committed both sexual harassment, and sexual abuse. But today Michelle Obama said it all with eloquence, and sincere emotion.
She spoke for herself, her daughters, and every woman in our nation. She said that for six days she has been unable to stop thinking about his words, and that “It has shaken me to my core in a way that I couldn’t have predicted.” Personally I was offended when he labeled his vile remarks “locker room talk.” I have been in many locker rooms, and never heard trash anywhere nearing his unforgivable remarks.
“This is not normal,” Mrs. Obama said at one point. “This is not politics as usual.” At another she insisted that “strong men don’t need to put down women to make themselves feel powerful.”
Perfect. There has been nothing normal about this extremely long campaign season which has been primarily based on personal attacks. But this has taken it far beyond what might be considered near normal. This is not what we expect the leader of the free world to be; we must demand more from any man or woman who wants to live in the White House.
I had a friend when I lived in San Diego. She had been raped as a teenager, and by the time I met her, she had written several books about rape. Her awards from law enforcement and women’s groups were many. She explained this heinous act in a different way than I had ever heard. She told me that rape is less about sex, and more about men seeking control and power over women. This is apropos of Donald Trump. He is a weak man who seeks personal power above everything. He lacks the control and intellect to learn how to be a real man.
Those attending the speech at a campaign rally for Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire, expressed the fact that Mrs. Obama spoke for them, and was impressive while doing so.
Hillary Clinton tweeted: .@FLOTUS, I’m in awe. Thanks for putting into words what’s in so many of our hearts. -H.
Trump’s immoral attitude towards women needed to be discussed by a strong woman. It is women who have been rendered to a lesser status by men in this country, and it’s time for that to end. Women can make all the difference in this election. I have read about multiple women who no longer support Donald Trump, although their husbands or significant others remain in his camp.
I do not know how any strong woman could support Trump today. If it wasn’t enough for them that he revealed himself as a racist, a bigot, and an Islamophobe, this should prove once and for all that he has no moral character and is unfit to become our president.
Michelle Obama is always impressive. She will surely be heralded as one of the greatest First Ladies of all time. I’m only sorry that I wasn’t in New Hampshire today.
Please re-post and share the pride; thank you.
