A Republican Party In shambles has begun to display its future in 2017. Without effective leadership, the implosion of the GOP is inevitable. The weakness of RNC Chairman RNC, Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, and Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, cannot unite a party divided into three factions.
Paul Ryan is a man who is experiencing numerous problems. Like his predecessor, John Boehner, he has been unable to control the extremists in the House who are calling themselves the TEA Party or the Freedom Caucus. Whatever they choose to be labeled, these obstructionists have been allowed to control the House, and are the reason why our government is broken. They call themselves conservatives, but they are actually reactionaries; so far to the right, they are wrong.
His second problem involves supporters of Donald Trump. Although Ryan endorsed the failing presidential candidate, he now refuses to “defend” him. Anti-Trump forces no longer trust Ryan who flip-flopped several times in choosing to denounce Trump, support Trump, and now his position is unclear and undefined.
Extremists in the GOP have already begun a “power play” before the election results are confirmed in 16 days. Of course, they are offering a misleading reason for their efforts, but the truth is that they want to remove Ryan from his lofty position.
Traditionally, Republicans vote for leadership positions the week after the election. This small group of extremists is suggesting that those votes be delayed until December. They are using the excuse that they must first address a spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. History proves that shutting down the government has been a frequent goal of the TEA Party or Freedom Caucus.
This dishonesty has become the norm for the GOP, and a major component of why the Republican Party is fracturing. A large number of legislators who are actually “RINO’s,” Republicans In Name Only, have no qualifications to hold office in our nation’s government. Money bought them their seats, and the American people are paying the price.
I admit that Paul Ryan is a disappointment for me and many others who closely follow politics. His lack of courage, his inability to stand firmly on his positions, and his moral character are all in question. The problem for Republicans would be supporting Ryan, or allowing one of the extremists to lead Republicans in the House as the Speaker, or the Minority Leader.
There is a possibility that Democrats could regain control of the House; this would negate the decision regarding Paul Ryan. With 435 men and women up for reelection, it is nearly impossible to predict who will be victorious on November 8th. The “Trump effect” is still undefined.
The Republican Party has multiple obstacles, and all of them point to a party reorganization in 2017. Reince Priebus must be fired. Hopefully Mitch McConnell will lose his “do-nothing” position. Ryan is the wild card. He is supported by many in the GOP, but his party is losing faith in his abilities.
