President Obama was speaking in Las Vegas Sunday in support of Hillary Clinton. Much of his focus was turned to the battle for Harry Reid’s Senate seat; he is retiring in January.
The Democratic candidate is Catherine Cortez Masto. She served as Nevada’s Attorney General for two terms until 2015. Masto is well respected by both parties, and she has been endorsed by every law enforcement agency in the state. She worked successfully with both the Bush and Obama administrations.
Her Republican opponent is Joe Heck. Heck was a doctor in the U.S. Army reserves. After retiring, he was supported by the Koch brothers to serve in the House of Representatives. He served two terms, with no accomplishments to his credit. He voted in favor of big oil on every occasion, and supported a shutdown of our government unless Planned Parenthood was defunded. He is opposed to a woman’s right to abortion under any circumstances. He says he is a member of the Freedom Caucus, which is identical to the extremist TEA Party which has promised to do nothing; they kept their promise.
Obama listed the differences between Masto and Heck, and added one more damning criticism.
“There’s one other difference between the candidates: Catherine never supported Donald Trump,” Obama said.
“She never said she had ‘high hopes‘ he would become president. Never said she’d trust his fingers on the nuclear code,” Obama added.
Heck did withdraw his support after the tapes of Trump’s lewd comments about women were released, although he supported him through all of his racist and bigoted rants. During those times his poll numbers were adequate.
“Now that Trump’s poll numbers are cratering, suddenly he says, ‘No, I’m not supporting him,'” Obama said. “Too late. You don’t get credit for that.”
The bottom line is that Nevada’s people need someone who will work for them; not take taxpayer money and do nothing.
From a political position, Reid’s seat is critical for Democrats in their effort to regain control of the Senate. Last week Masto was losing in the polls by one-and-a-half points. Today, after their single debate, she is leading by more than two points.
It was reported today that Democrats in Nevada are heavily engaged in the early voting process which began last Saturday. My wife and I were at our polling place in the morning, and there was already a line.
Think positively; the American people can win this one. Please re-post, and thank you.
