The last two weeks of the general election have one thing in common throughout modern history; the polls fluctuate almost hourly. What is important, is the Electoral College. As of today, experts predict that Hillary Clinton has 252 votes; Donald Trump 126. The magic number is 270. With this reality comes the likelihood of another resounding defeat for the Republican Party. Only one question remains; who will control the House and Senate in 2017?
Democrats are likely to win 47 seats; Republicans 46. Seven seats are currently highly contested races; Indiana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Nevada, North Carolina, Missouri, and Florida. As of today, Thursday, October 27, Democrats have slight leads in three, Republicans in four. This is of great concern for Republican leadership. Control of the Senate is questionable. Will the ‘Trump effect’ cost the GOP more than the presidency?
If our government is to become effective once again, Democratic control of the Senate is a must. Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, has promised to do nothing for eight years. McConnell isn’t good for much, but he has kept at least one promise. Republicans do not work for the American people. This is the same GOP which lost in 2008, and has failed to change. Without that change, the least qualified candidate in history, Donald Trump, is now the Republican standard bearer.
What about the House of Representatives? All 435 members are up for reelection, and many of the races are too close to call.
For someone such as myself, who is a true patriot, and is aware that our democracy only works when our government moves closer to the center, I can only hope that Democrats will regain both houses. The Republican Party has moved so far to the right that our legislative body is dysfunctional. Centrists work for America. Deliberation and compromise must return to Washington. The TEA Party has destroyed the GOP, and converted it into a group of extremists and obstructionists; ambitious men and women whose only goal is reelection. Their support of the one-percent has greatly harmed the majority of the American people.
When Barrack Obama won his second term in 2012, Republicans promised to change. They declared that the party could no longer rely on its base; middle aged and older whites. They promised to attract minorities, and women. They lied. Voting records in congress prove that they have alienated even more demographics in the last four years.
Donald Trump runs a campaign filled with hate and prejudice. He has attacked blacks by denying a necessity for judicial reform. He has called Hispanics ‘criminals and rapists.’ He would violate the first amendment and exclude all Muslims from seeking asylum in America. He is a sexual predator, and no self-respecting mother, sister, or daughter could possibly support this vile and despicable megalomaniac.
I hope that Republicans have a valid reason to panic. The majority of Americans; the working class; fare far better under Democratic administrations historically. The one-percent always has the advantage, and it’s time to take our country back.
Please vote, and vote for yourself, not for the wealthy and major corporations. If you re-post this, you may help some Americans know the truth. Thank you.
